Review Dangerous / Michael Jackson:

Michael Jackson was still going for pop hits with 1991's Dangerous, but he also front-loaded the album with six straight Teddy Riley-assisted cuts. This half-hour swoop of tense, aggressive, often angular funk was Jackson's most interesting music since Thriller, and still sounds, well, invincible on this remastered edition. After that, the record's uneven, but there's nothing embarrassing about it, either. "Gone Too Soon", a non-Jackson composition about teen AIDS casualty Ryan White, is a quiet statement (particularly played next to the choir-laden "Heal the World", "Keep the Faith", and "Will You Be There") showing that the star doesn't always have to get showy. The sprightly "Black or White" is explicitly pro-interracial romance, an angle its video didn't go near, and the urgent "Give In to Me" is almost scary. Scary good, that is. -Rickey Wright.

Review Greatest Hits / Kylie Minogue:

Like fine wine, Kylie's music has aged gracefully over the years. With the rise of "old skool" and her rise back to superstardom, PWL is at last getting the recognition it deserves. Greatest Hits shares a similar track listing to Kylie's 1992 best of but there are notable inclusions and exceptions on this newer collection. Absent from the first anthology, single versions of "Finer Feelings" (Brothers In Rhythm 7" Mix) and "What Do I Have To Do?" (7" Mix) are at last included. The worldwide smash "It's No Secret" doesn't make it on to this collection but strangely the "B" side "Say the Word-I'll Be There" does. Commercially available for the first time, and last heard on the 1990 Enjoy Yourself tour), the sexy Oz Tour Mix of "Locomotion" features on the bonus mix CD. The collection adds weight to Kylie's early mentor Pete Waterman's assertion that Stock, Aitken and Waterman would one day be viewed as the 1980s equivalent of Motown. Who would have thought back in 1988 that "I Should Be So Lucky" and "Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi" would become such gems? -John Galilee.

Review No Way Out / Puff Daddy:

For old-school hip-hop fans, raised on Run-DMC and Public Enemy, this is the equivalent of Chinese water-torture: a 17-track collection of tepid beats, lame, solipsistic rhymes and numbingly obvious 80s-pop references-mostly performed by the music's reigning majordomo: a man who, to all appearances, can neither rap, sing nor dance. What's indisputable, however, is that Sean "Puffy" Combs' success demonstrates a profound rupture in the hip-hop firmament. As the style intruded upon the commercial mainstream, its makers sensed the lucrative opportunities on offer, and became more blatantly aspirational; consequently, the lyrics changed-their subject-matter shifting from revolution to acquisition, from AKs to Versace-while the music became less dense and more buyer-friendly. And despite (or, more precisely, because of) his artistic failings, Combs was the perfect exemplar of where the genre was at, post-Tupac, post-Biggie. He'd like to claim credit for remaking hip-hop in his own image, but in fact, he's merely a symptom of its decline. -Andrew McGuire.

Review A Gift of Love Vol.1: Music Inspired By Love Poems of Rumi / Deepak Chopra:

"The innocence of my life releases the God I love everywhere. " These are the words of Rumi, 13th-century poet and founder of the Whirling Dervishes of Sufism, as spoken by the mature and melodious voice of Rosa Parks. Her voice, American history, those words, intense longing: Power. In celebration of the human spirit, The Gift of Love is a recitation of the love poems of Rumi by Dr. Chopra and celebrity friends, including Madonna, Goldie Hawn, and Robert A. F. Thurman. Sensual Middle Eastern-influenced music backs the reading and provides breaks between sections such as "Love Drunk" and "The Light of Love. " The Gift of Love is sincere and potent stuff, unafraid of the deep physical, spiritual, and mental hunger that Rumi's words not only taste, but roll about the tongue and swallow whole. -Paige La Grone.

Review Bunkka / Paul Oakenfold:

According to the Guinness Book of Records, Paul Oakenfold is the world's most successful DJ and few would argue-he is, after all, the man who almost single-handedly invented the concept of the superstar DJ. Despite this, and his producing bands such as the Happy Mondays and U2, Bunkka is his first real stab at solo superstardom. While it occasionally pushes the right buttons, it's far too blunt and schizophrenic to appeal to his traditional fan base. Abandoning the podium trance with which he made his name, Bunkka sees Oakenfold marrying Hybrid-like breakbeats with rock, hip-hop and progressive house-not to mention a healthy dose of pop. Add an impressive list of guest vocalists-Tricky, Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube, Perry Farrell, Hunter S Thompson-and a slew of radio-friendly tunes, and it soon becomes clear that Oakey has gone straight for the populist jugular. Fair enough, you might say, but no amount of star turns, catchy choruses and occasional flashes of brilliance can hide the fact that Bunkka is fundamentally a very patchy album. -Matt Anniss.

Review Don't Bore Us - Get To The Chorus! Greatest Hits [EXTRA TRACKS] / Roxette:

Rarely has a "best-of" package been so aptly (or so admirably) named. While never quite able to shake off the inevitable ABBA comparisons, Sweden's Roxette have, indeed, worked to a fairly simple blueprint over the course of their 13-year career: simple, workmanlike songs with insistent hooks; occasionally daft lyrics-sounding, at times, like a cruel parody of Europop-and slick, radio-friendly production. In terms of commercial success, the result-over 40 million records sold-speaks for itself. Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson first came to international attention with two singles, "The Look" and "Dressed For Success"-the latter, perhaps the most naked declaration of intent since the Pet Shop Boys' "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)". The careful placement of "It Must Have Been Love" in the Pretty Woman soundtrack didn't exactly hurt their careers either, and from that point on their fame was assured. Later efforts ("June Afternoon", one of four new tracks included here) have hinted at the influence of Prince, but why change a winning formula? -Andrew McGuire.

Review Cheers / Obie Trice:

Obie Trice's Cheers should have been way more than simply the sum of its notable parts. Being "down" with hip-hop's unholy trinity (50 Cent, Eminem, Dr Dre) can act as either an absolute blessing or a tremendous burden. With production from the latter two and knob-twiddling by Timbaland, one would think that all he'd have to do is phone in his verses and start collecting big royalty cheques. But that ain't the case. Firstly, Trice's all-star cast of homies so clearly outshine him; Eminem's verse dominates the misogynist "Lady", Dr Dre's terrific keyboard loops and anti-Ja-Rule rhymes stand out on "S*** Hits The Fan" and 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks tear up the nihilistic "We All Die One Day", so that you start thinking that maybe he should have limited his VIP guest list. On the catchy synthesized club banger "Got Some Teeth" and the loosely autobiographical "Follow My Life", the focus group named Shady Records give Trice some room to demo his unique sense of humour, in particular on the former track where he hopes that his bar-hopping booty calls are not repulsive in the morning when the booze wears off. As expected, the two Nate Dogg collaborations ("The Set Up" and "Look in My Eyes") are two of the more enjoyable, radio-friendly tunes, but they also reveal just how slightly-above average an emcee Trice is. Cheers is more D12 than 50 Cent in terms of quality. -Dalton Higgins.

Review Victoria Beckham / Victoria Beckham:

Mrs Beckham completes the set of solo Spice Girls albums with her self-titled debut, Victoria Beckham. Leading off with the first single and meatiest song on the album "Not Such an Innocent Girl", the 12 tracks breeze through a number of different styles with varying degrees of success. You can hear Victoria's voice adapt to suit the song, not quite finding a style of her own but still sounding far better than many critics could have imagined. "A Mind of It's Own" is very pleasant, inoffensive pop where VB sounds little like former band mate Geri in a whisperey, half-sung, half-spoken kind of way. Another song where her voice and style morph into that of a different pop peer is on "I. O. U. ", a sweet ballad which sounds a little like a find on the studio floor during Madonna's Ray of Light sessions. It's unlikely that Victoria will win any new fans with this effort as there are no songs to stand out and wrestle for attention but aside from over-using the dreaded vo-coder, it is easily a pleasant enough, inoffensive pop record. -Georgina Collins.

Review Gilles Peterson in Africa / Gilles Peterson:

Following the success of his recent Gilles Peterson In Brazil compilation, the world's number one dancefloor jazz/world aficionado returns with a similar jaunt through the groovier side of African music. Given the global popularity of Afrobeat and Afrofunk, it's no surprise to find a few classic of the genre here: Peter King's "Ajo", Manu Dibango's "New Bell" and Fela Kuti's "Ye Ye De Smell" are evergreens but are sandwiched between lesser known (but equally funky) tracks from the likes of Ethiopian jazz maestro Mulatu Astatqé, Feqadu Amae-Mesqel and Letta Mbulu. The second disc leans more towards modern African sounds and remixes. Kicking off with Masters At Work's anthemic reworking of Fela's "Expensive Shit", the CD shifts mercurially through Carl Craig's take on Cesaria Evora's "Angola" and IG Culture's mutated take on "Aso Kere", Thievery Corporation's "The Heart's A Lonely Hunter" and Osborne's "Afrika". All in all, there's plenty here to sate the most ardent African-groove enthusiast. -Paul Sullivan.
