Review The Don Killuminati: the Seven Day Theory / 2Pac:While in prison, Tupac Shakur studied the works of Makaveli, and used it as an alias for The Don Killuminati, which amounts to little more than a call to war. The 7 Day Theory, released less than two months after his death, is a slightly grisly listen. From the distinctly uneasy experience of 2Pac cussing Notorious B. I. G, Jay-Z and Nas on the intro, you are then faced with the prospect of listening to a very macabre album. Caught in the middle of the petty arguments that directly contributed to his death in 1996, 2Pac uses a mixture of conspiracy theory and threats to get his message across, there is little evidence of the persuasive charm and sheer personality you'll find on his other albums, particularly All Eyez On Me and debut 2pacalypse Now. It's not without some fine moments, "To Live" and "Die In L. A", recall some of his best work but overall this is the sound of a man who's not having fun any more. -Chris Blenkarn.

Review Cream Classics Vol. 2 / Various Artists:Once again Cream go out of their way to bring the soul back to dance music. Cream Classics Volume 2 builds on the successful first compilation and brings back some of that fantastic old skool. You get a triple CD Box Set with 50 of Creams favourite dance fillers going right back into the 80's; now that's old skool. There is a truly interesting selection of music here that spans a wide spectrum of dance. It's an historical account of tunes from the last couple of decades that helped to define the genre. You won't find a foul tune on any of the CDs, which are all very listenable. You will, however, find some real gems. Going all the way back, New Order's "Blue Monday" is very nostalgic. Some real turn-of-the-decade, defining-times, tracks are included like Orbital's "Chime" and The Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea. There is a definite lean toward funky house on this box-set, which adds some real life to the electronic sounds. [+]Songs like Jamiroquai's "Space Cowboy" and Moby's "Go" are great dance tunes. There are also some genuine classics to be found here. The Sneaker Pimp's "Spin Spin Sugar" and Armand Van Helden's "The Funk Phenomena" stand out in particular. Some careful thought has gone into the track selection and the mixing is smooth and progressive. The songs tend to get better and better and disk three is quite fantastic. This is a must have for any house fan's collection. Defining tunes that sound as good today blasting from the speakers as they did throughout the 90s. -Jarrod Rendle.

Review Life Goes on / Donell Jones:Life Goes On is the third album from Chicago born singer/songwriter/producer Donell Jones. Since the single "U Know What's Up", featuring the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez, catapulted him into the international R&B spotlight in 2000, his sultry urban love songs have been winning over cynics with unnerving ease. But Jones' corresponding sophomore album Where I Wanna Be was a mere coquettish glance into the cauldron of simmering seductive sleaze that is his imagination. With grinding hip-hop-inspired grooves and lush sensual melodies aplenty, Life Goes On sees Jones lustily tackle every element of love paying particular attention to infidelity and, inevitably, sex. While his storytelling lyrical approach is at times charming, he seems unable to resist the temptation of adding some gratuitous filth: "I'll put some honey on you. It's a sticky situation we're bound to get into" he purrs on "Don't Leave". But, despite the occasional lack of subtly, Life Goes On is bulging with finely crafted mid-tempo moments such as "Still", dreamy ballads "Where You Are (Is Where I Wanna Be)" and even some feisty funk-fuelled dance ("Freakin' U"). Review Harlem World: Parental Advisory / Mase:Harlem World describes a hedonistic lifestyle infomercialist Tom Vu would envy. Girls, riches, mo' money, mo' problems-it's all part of the game when you're Sean "Puffy" Combs's protégé, Mase. With his distinctive, narcoleptic vocals, Mase paints vivid pictures of singular Mase-ian problems on the dance-floor hits "Feel So Good", "Cheat On U", and "Wanna Hurt Mase?" Harlem World seems like a nice shiny package of proven hit making; problem is, Mase packs the charisma of Matt Dillon (always promising, but always the supporting actor). He has trouble keeping Harlem World interesting, hence the preponderance of guests, including Busta Rhymes, Lil' Kim, Jay-Z, Total, and Puffy, of course. Good news: the Puff Daddy chop shop is open for beat recycling, and Harlem World will ring more than a few bells of recognition. Not-so-good news: Puffy's style of commercial rap is dependent on charisma (see the Notorious B. I. G. and Lil' Kim), and Mase is running on empty. -Todd Inoue.

Review The Best of Fad Gadget / Fad Gadget:While it is unlikely that the release of this career-encompassing double CD will rocket to the top of the charts, Fad Gadget-Mute's first ever signing-deserve slightly more than the recognition they are generally granted (ie next to none). Essentially the brainchild of keyboardist Frank Tovey, Fad Gadget haunted the periphery of the British electronica scene of the 1980s, managing to emerge with neither the kudos of Cabaret Voltaire nor the sales of the Human League. Though properly extracting Fad Gadget from the dustbin of history would probably necessitate pliers and a blowtorch, this expansive collection is a decent resume of their virtues. Echoes of Tovey's sparse, eccentric electronica can still be heard in records by artists as diverse as Depeché Mode and Luke Haines, and tunes such as "Fireside Favourite" and "For Whom the Bells Toll" retain a gloomy, camp charm in their own right. -Andrew Mueller.
