Review Tical 2000: Judgement Day / Method Man:The Wu-Tang warrior's second solo joint is so conceptually huge, only somebody who's been high every day for a decade could have imagined it: hip-hop album as science-fiction double-feature as celebrity parade as horror movie as multi-layered masquerade as an endlessly Baroque flow of spiels and skits, hallucinatory fantasy, and killer-bee menace. The romantic strains of Tical have been replaced by pure, sweaty sex, and Meth's image transformation from laidback muscle to bloodthirsty cyborg (with a phone book's worth of guest stars) just means he compacts his flow more tightly. The production is the Wu standard of berserk little loops and spare boom-bap, though RZA's tracks are head and shoulders above those of his disciples. -Douglas Wolk.

Review It's All About the Stragglers / Artful Dodger:Strange title but perhaps one that will become increasingly familiar if It's All About The Stragglers earns what might be its deserved status as enduring pop masterpiece. Essentially UK garage with the vocal sheen of US R&B, there is also a wealth of detail and reference that defies easy categorisation. And despite the confusing statistic of nine different vocalists (including Craig David and Robbie Craig) spread over 12 tracks, there is a flow and clarity to Stragglers. Much of it comes from their minimal palette of tight garage beats and pretty keyboard sounds that twinkle like a sonic rendering of fairy-lights. Other elements are dance (both pop and underground) staples: Ibizan guitars, rave-accelerated vocals, tech-house textures and subtle digital arabesques. Every track sounds like a single (four UK Top 10 hits had already been taken from it on its release including number one "Re-Rewind") and all precariously balance a killer pop sensibility with gestures towards a sexier, urban dance floor. Unbeatable stuff-and if a touch child-like (compared to say NIN) then also more than a little sublime. -Tony Marcus.

Review DJ Kicks - Kruder & Dorfmeister / Kruder & Dorfmeister:Austrians Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, whose smooth and sexy acid jazz has attracted almost as much attention as their curious resemblance to American folksters Simon and Garfunkel, demonstrate their skills on yet another instalment of Studio K7's DJ Kicks series. The mix highlights the best of European trip-hop, acid jazz, and drum and bass, with their own "High Noon" and "Black Baby" mixed with tracks from British trip-hoppers Herbalizer, German technicians Hardfloor, and Viennese weirdo Patrick Pulsinger, among others. Their straightforward mixing is complemented by a heavy dose of studio postproduction but the emphasis here is on track selection rather than technical trickery. Review .....And Then There Was X / DMX:Hip-hop is a genre notorious for careers that fizzle after strong debuts, a lack of artistic development, and for years to pass between albums. On his third album in just two years, DMX breaks these- -and nearly every other-"rule" of the game: the pre-eminent thug rapper of his time, he includes sensitive, religious poetry in his liner notes; though he sticks with the formula that's served him so well in the past DMX is a talented songwriter, and his compositions get more interesting-and more subtle-on X; and though he could get nearly any guest star he'd want, DMX eschews even his Ruff Ryder posse pals (except for "D-X-L", which features the Lox and Drag-On) on 11 guest-less tracks. Ryders uber-producer Swizz Beatz shows up for 4 strong tracks but is nearly matched by Irv Gotti and a pair of largely unknown Ruff Ryders house producers, Shok and P. Killer Trakz. In fact, the only thing conventional about the album is the first track-the eminently skippable, obligatory introductory skit. Start with track two and enjoy. -Randy Silver.

Review Control / Janet Jackson:"Free at last / Out here on my own," Janet Jackson sings on the title track of her 1986 blockbuster, Control, an album about personal liberation, romantic longing, and, of all things, sexual responsibility. After two albums of middling dance-pop that were comfortably in the Jackson family mold, Janet dropped in on the burgeoning Minneapolis funk factory of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and came up with five top 10 hits, including the opening triad of "Control," "Nasty," and "What Have You Done for Me Lately," as well as the yearning "When I Think of You" and "Let's Wait Awhile," that rare song (considering some of Janet's hits to come) about not having sex. In its own way, Control is the most convincing declaration of artistic independence since Stevie Wonder's "Music of My Mind. " -Daniel Durchholz.
