Review Reverence / Faithless:With a production sound firmly rooted in club culture (Faithless ringleader Rollo was responsible for Felix's dancefloor anthem "Don't You Want Me" and co-conspirator Sister Bliss can claim to be the world's most successful female DJ), Reverence allies house beats with shades of hip hop, blues, reggae and soul. The majority of the tracks are infused with the rhymes of Buddhist rapper Maxi Jazz, often elegant, sometimes incongruous but always distinctive. The album's breadth of ambition sometimes means Faithless spread themselves too thinly: witness the mediocre acoustic pop of "Don't Leave" and the clicheed sensuality of "If Lovin' You Is Wrong". The band are at their most memorable on the tracks which worked so well on the dancefloor: the housey hi-hats, urgent synths and insistent beats of "Salva Mea" and "Insomnia" will be recalled fondly by many a clubber. -Ed Potton.

Review Exit (Remastered) / Tangerine Dream:Released during a period of tense Cold War saber rattling, Tangerine Dream's Exit (1981) shows that even a machine-driven electronic band can claim a social conscience. Its first track, "Kiev Mission" (which the label misspelled on the album), opens with explosions, sirenlike wails, and then, against a stark sonic backdrop, a whispered plea (a female voice speaking Russian) to end the threat of a "limited" nuclear war, a genuine and much-discussed danger at the time. Some of the album's atmospheric pieces are a touch dated and static (though the X-Files-like "Remote Viewing" merits a thumbs-up). Still, Exit contains two of the most intriguing short-form compositions the group ever released: the driving "Choronzon" and the pulsing, ever-evolving "Network 23," a truly arresting piece in its day, and one that still sounds good a few decades later. -Terry Wood.

Review Songs of Faith and Devotion / Depeche Mode:People are so predictable in their Greatest Albums list-nominating Pet Sounds and What's Goin' On?, and neglecting Depeche Mode. But if you had to spend the rest of your life listening to either a) some boring old classic soul or b) four boys from Basildon making sleazy stadium electro-goth-rawk, stomping all over the place in leather trousers and stetsons, and berating God in no uncertain terms for condemning them to a life of rock, who would you choose? Well yes: that's why you'll be wanting to buy a second copy of Songs of Love and Devotion, now your first one's worn out. And in under a week you'll be vibrating with pleasure again as "Walking In My Shoes" dooms it's way to a gulag-sized chorus, and "In Your Room" comes across like a smack-Queen punching you repeatedly in the face with the biggest bass-line they could find. Review Song Of Innocence / David Axelrod:David Axelrod is a man beloved of beat-diggers everywhere. DJ Shadow swears by Axelrod's epic arrangements, and Dr Dre (amongst many others) has sampled the essence of the funk bounce that lace his productions. This intellectual hipster founded the black music department at Capitol Records in the 1960s and did production work for Cannonball Adderley, Lou Rawls, Electric Prunes and Man From Uncle's David McCallum. This, Axelrod's first solo album for Capitol in 1968, was inspired by the visions of 18th-century British mystic, poet and painter, William Blake, and (along with it's sister album, Songs Of Experience) is classic Axelrod. Majestic in its gothic vision, the record is formed around a cohesive "suite" of seven songs that unselfconsciously marries jazz cool and prog virtuosity to classical elegance.
