The Annual 2002 is in fact a retrospective of 2001, and, coming from the satisfaction-guaranteed Ministry stables, contains all the big tunes from another great year for dance music. From Ibiza 2001 faves Roger Sanchez's "Another Chance", Raven Maize's "Real Life" and Iio's "Rapture" to Ayia Napa's garage flavas such as So Solid Crew's "21 Seconds" and DJ Pied Piper and the Master of Ceremonies' "Do You Really Like It", there's not a duff track to be found. Bringing it right up to date are more recent tracks such as Supermen Lovers' "Starlight", Jean-Jacques Smoothies' "2 People" and Par-T-One's "I'm So Crazy", which should be packing the dance floors well into 2002. 2001 was such a great year that the good people at the Ministry couldn't fit all the tracks onto their usual two discs, so this time you get three for your money, but this doesn't dilute the quality in any way. The Rolls Royce of trance-house mixes, and every bit as cool as the polar bear on the sleeve, this first edition of Sasha and John Digweed's Northern Exposure sets is the tightest and most effortless of the series. With 11 superbly arranged cuts from the likes of William Orbit, Rabbit in the Moon, and the Future Sound of London, not one moment is wasted. The disc's flavor is decidedly organic and wholly evocative of all-night mountain raves or desert parties. Starting with the early-morning stretch of Keiichi Suzuki's delightfully sunny "Satellite Serenade," the duo swiftly build the tempo up to the breezy ambient plateau of Morgan King's "Free" before heading into harder house territories. The metronomic pulse and atmospheric chanteuse vocals of Fuzzy Logic's "Obsession" form an incremental crescendo with Orbit's "Water from a Vine Leaf. The extension of Mark Doyle's four-hour radio sessions on Jazz FM to a series of compilations has proved a masterstroke, with the superb Winter Chill and Serve Chilled albums successfully transcribing the sleepy playlists of the show to a permanent medium. This second volume proves as accomplished as its forebears with the packaging again opening out to two compact discs, the first with a distinct down-tempo flavour while the second takes a hazier, late-night route. What sets these compilations apart, however, from the swathe of similar material already available is in the way the dream tracklisting of material from chill-out stalwarts such as Morcheeba and The Space Brothers is supported by tracks from more obscure labels. Of these check "Directions" and "Your Girl" from Ollie Buckwell's glorious Memphis Industries imprint or the now hard-to-find Jazzanova remix of Ursula Rucker's "Circe". The Ministry of Sound take us Back to the Old Skool once more with the second volume of their nostalgic house compilation. From vocal house classics such as CeCe Peniston's "Finally", Blue Pearl's "Naked in the Rain" and Robin S's "Show Me Love" to acid house faves LFO, D Mob and Altern 8, via former chart smashes from the likes of Rozalla, Snap, Sub Sub and the Shamen, you might not remember the titles or artists, but every track brings back fond memories. Spiral Tribe, Castlemorton, smiley faces, Global Hypercolour T-shirts, whistles, white gloves and a nation of clubbers discovering ecstasy-all neatly summed up in 40 tracks. What is even more astonishing is the staying power of some of the tracks present, Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea", Chad Jackson's "Hear the Drummer Get Wicked" and King Bee's "Back by Dope Demand" still get dropped into sets the length and breadth of the country to be met with a collective sigh of familiarity, without sounding dated in any way.
