Each of the Global Underground albums (from the likes of Sasha, Darren Emerson and Danny Tenaglia) have carried a distinct blend of house and trance-funky, progressive and intense. Dutch DJ, Sander Kleinenberg's mix on Nu Breed Vol. 4 is no exception. Disc One is that familiar hybrid of smooth and deep synth-led tunes with the premium on pretty melodies and consistent dancefloor shuffle. Kleinenberg's style leans towards peak-time podium classics but is distinguishable from the usual crop of mainstream compilations by virtue of his choices. The gems of the bunch include Satoshi Tomie's "Atari", Hernan Cantaneo's "Deep Funk" and Sasha and Emerson's moody, tribal "Scorcho". All possess an utterly infectious groove that kicks in the first ten seconds and then manages to ramp up the energy with raucous dubbed-out bass lines and quirky effects. What's really worth the cash though is Disc Two, where we find Kleinenberg delivering a curious, eclectic mix in fine style. With cool and precisely engineered layers of rhythmic mystery and suspense, he begins gently with Zinger Meets Spry's off-centre jazz ramble, "Story of the Heaviest Bassline Ever" and Swayzak's lovely "State of Grace". Meanwhile old hands such as The Art of Noise ("Yebo") and Felix Da Housecat, (the demented "Silver Screen Shower Scene") rub shoulders with relative newcomers such as Ghosts' ("10th Planet") and Hidden ("Krystal") in a dancefloor meltdown which manages to be both sexy and wickedly aggressive. Nightmares on Wax's DJ Ease is best known for producing a pacific (even comedown) version of hip-hop or downtempo music. Compiling and mixing this album for the DJ Kicks series (which has included rapturously received collections from Stereo MCs and Kruder & Dorfmeister) he presents a subtle mix that moves from hazy breakbeat jazz into leftfield, modern (and politically correct) UK and US hip-hop. Using material from Mo'Wax (the high-velocity delivery of Blackalicious), A Tribe Called Quest, NYs Kenny Dope and Manchester's Grand Central, Ease scratches and fuses an expert selection of alt. hip-hop. At times he layers tunes which themselves sample other tunes to create a complex mesh of meaning and reference. Although titled The Chillout Annual 2002, 2001 was the year of the chill-out compilation, getting off to a fine start with The Chillout Sessions, which spawned a plethora of imitations, some good, some bad. It seems the years of larging it had finally taken their toll on clubbers, who went in search of something a bit more calming and, well, chilled. The Ministry of Sound round off 2001 with The Chillout Annual 2002, a downbeat companion to their traditional clubber's bible, The Annual 2002. All the big names in the genre are present-Groove Armada, Zero 7, Lemon Jelly, Blue States, Kinobe, Nightmares on Wax and Bent, as well as down-tempo numbers from those normally associated with more up-tempo fare, such as Chemical Brothers, Faithless and Underworld. There are even the seemingly essential couple of token indie tracks from Badly Drawn Boy and Radiohead, which to be honest aren't really that welcome, but don't detract from proceedings that much. -Helen Marquis.
