Review DJ Kicks - Playgroup: Mixed By Playgroup [VINYL] / Playgroup:Trevor Jackson (formerly known as hip-hop producer The Underdog) has built up some serious beat credentials over the years-the kind that would make most so called "underground" artists look like manufactured boy bands. Even his recent Playgroup project-by far his most accessible and "poppy" work to date-managed to retain a definite keep-it-real feel amid the shiny, feel good blend of punk, hip-hop, funk and disco. Here, the stalwart presents the next instalment of K7's esteemed DJ Kicks series. With over two decades of involvement with music under his belt and no associations to any fixed genre, Jackson must have had a nightmare trying to slim his options down to album length. He's done it though, and with skill and aplomb, stringing together 23 tracks that range from the 70s/80s era of Human League ("Do or Die") and Flying Lizards ("House of Jealous Lovers") up to more modern offering like Metro Area's "Caught Up" and I:Cube's reworking of Ana Rago's "You're God". On the whole, the mix feels retro and contemporary all at the same time; it's subtle asperity fitting in nicely with the current revival in louche 80s electro. As can be expected the mixing is beat perfect with a tracklisting which, though slanted towards the harder end of the spectrum, with tracks from Test, Full Cycle and Renegade Hardware, is kept balanced through the use of records such as Sci-Clone's much plated remix of "Everywhere I Go. " Cramming seventeen tracks into an hour ensures a constantly evolving set with highlights including Loxy's debut effort for the Architecture label, Digital & Spirit's first collaborative work for Razor's Edge and rising star and Protocol label manager Bill Riley's vocal masterwork "Closing In. Review Gatecrasher Global Sound System / Various Artists:Essentially, Gatecrasher is known for two things: its loyal affinity to trance music and the colourful cyber bunnies who worship at its altar. If you've never been, and don't really fancy dressing up like an extra from Pokémon, this is a good introduction to one of Britain's premier nightclub experiences. The pace and quality is relentless-a never-ending stream of sequenced nirvana that rarely fails to deliver. Spread across two CDs, the first nudges gently percussive techno into the realms of soft Teutonic trance. Oliver Klein's "Rheinkraf" bubbles away like effervescent mercury, while the seductive pianos tickling Frean's "Heaven's Gate" are fittingly celestial. England's Terra Firma subtly ups the ante with the staccato-driven "Keep Moving" and the ethereal vocals wafting through "Love Has Come Again" are welcomingly human. After this comforting blanket of rich progressive house, CD2 blows in like a force 9 gale. The beats are harder, the riffs razor sharp, and when storm-trooping anthems like Albion's "Air" march neatly through your brain, you're left in no doubt that Gatecrasher is one UK export we should all be mightily proud of. -Paul Tierney.
