Sasha and his fellow turntable conspirators John Digweed and Paul Oakenfeld have been on impressive winning streaks since the mid- to late '90s, particularly with their increasingly popular and influential Global Underground series. This addition to the cycle, a live set recorded in the Spanish dance-music haven Ibiza, comes close to setting a new standard. Sasha is working solo here, and in addition to showing off his prodigious live mixing skills and inventive use of source material, he also creates an undeniable identity for himself. Digweed accomplished the same thing last year with the masterful Bedrock, but where that record was elegantly light and airy, this one burns with a sharper, more manic energy. Throwing out resolute rhythms and melting house samples bathed in dreamy backdrops, Sasha cuts through dense structures and clever transitions with superhuman alacrity. It does take him a little while, as his use of trance-inducing repetition strays a bit while he establishes a groove on the first disc. Disc 2, however, simply tears into an incredibly danceable vibe. Mixing together melodic snippets and varying moods, from the dark trance of "Fibonacci Sequence" to the ecstatic release of "Xpander" (from his EP of the same name), Sasha mainlines rhythm and creativity through to a satisfyingly exhausted conclusion. -Matthew Cooke.

The Ministry of Sound take us Back to the Old Skool once more with the second volume of their nostalgic house compilation. From vocal house classics such as CeCe Peniston's "Finally", Blue Pearl's "Naked in the Rain" and Robin S's "Show Me Love" to acid house faves LFO, D Mob and Altern 8, via former chart smashes from the likes of Rozalla, Snap, Sub Sub and the Shamen, you might not remember the titles or artists, but every track brings back fond memories. Spiral Tribe, Castlemorton, smiley faces, Global Hypercolour T-shirts, whistles, white gloves and a nation of clubbers discovering ecstasy-all neatly summed up in 40 tracks. What is even more astonishing is the staying power of some of the tracks present, Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea", Chad Jackson's "Hear the Drummer Get Wicked" and King Bee's "Back by Dope Demand" still get dropped into sets the length and breadth of the country to be met with a collective sigh of familiarity, without sounding dated in any way. The best attempts at producing high quality ambient music-Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92, or the KLF's Chill Out-are the results of an eclectic, adventurous mind. But while it's true that Chilled Euphoria boasts a laudably diverse selection-everything from ambient grandaddy Brian Eno's "Music For Airports (Ambient 1)" to an alternative cut of trance dullard Chicane's "Saltwater"-there's a presiding feeling that this is less because of brave choices, more because of uncomfortable compromises. Mixed by Red Jerry, the house-spinning head-honcho of London-based Hooj records, this surely should be a compilation that knows its oats, but all too often, the big names-Moby, Primal Screa, and, uh, Moby again-are hammered in like square pegs into round holes. Still, when it works, it undoubtedly work -see the beatless mix of "Smokebelch II" by Sabres Of Paradise, or the ever-reliable Underworld, contributing the mood-defining "Second Hand". -Louis Pattison.

Wax will always have its place of honour, but MIDI controllers, laptops and other forms of technical wizardry continue to inspire DJs throughout the land. In 2004, one of the world's most popular, Sasha, performed extended aural surgery on his Involver release, moulding ten tracks into a softer, vaguely ambient, yet still lethally danceable mélange. But live, the studio tricks didn't translate with such panache. So he built his own tool, a box of circuits, knobs and processors he calls MAVEN, and took it for a test run on Fundacion. The result, ironically, will make you forget all about the fancy gadgetry, since that's not the side of the brain that involves motor function. More house-oriented and playful, this is Sasha's most overtly dance floor-oriented release since 1999's Ibiza. 17 tracks are thoroughly diced and sliced, served up hot with sides of electro ("Electromagnetic") and driving pop (the album-ending one-two punch of Goldfrapp and M83, for instance). Say what you will about DJs without turntables, but no matter how innovative the means, the end goal remains the same: delirious crowds and late-night bliss. In a world where music has broken up into tiny digital pieces, astute artists like Sasha are only adapting. -Matthew Cooke.

The Classic Chill Out Album Vol 2's predecessor is set to become the number one selling chill out collection of 2001 so the second instalment has much to live up to. Unfortunately I fear the chill out bubble has well and truly burst and this is just a last ditch attempt to milk the genre for as much as it's worth-cue the sound of barrels being scraped. A cursory glance at the tracklisting confirms my suspicions-Dido, Moby, William Orbit and Goldfrapp all make obligatory and uninspired appearances, although, to be honest, these are the high points. Wait until the dull jazz of Martin Taylor or Stan Getz snoozes by, Sade underwhelms you with the soporific "No Ordinary Love" or the realisation kicks in that you're listening to "Crocketts Theme" from Jan Hammer. Even worse, cringe to various bastardisations of real classical music, where Vivaldi, Holst and Beethoven are all given a New Age re rub with disastrous results. "Fur Elise" on a dodgy pub piano, anyone? -Paul Tierney.
