Review Perfecto Presents Paul Oakenfold in Ibiza / Various Artists:Like your favourite gourmet restaurant, Paul Oakenfold always mixes the familiar with pleasant new twists. On Ibiza, Oakenfold is every inch the vintage progressive house/trance DJ, both discs packed with springboard dynamics, variety and spice. Opening cut "Waiting", a John Creamer remix of a Nat Monday composition, gets the pulse jogging with 10-plus minutes of invigorating trance. Depeche Mode chip in with Danny Tenaglia's mix of "I Feel Loved" and there's his own lush mix of U2's "Beautiful Day". The collection is brought steaming home by Insigma's house trance driver "Open Your Eyes", and PPK's dramatic but house-fun "ResuRection (Space Club Mix)". Things do get a bit wonky midway through the record's first half, as Radiohead's "Idioteque" is too twee and tart for this mix's overall tone. It takes the freeway-crunching "Transit" by Arena to bring Ibiza back into comfortable contextual territory. Nobody manages to pack clubs worldwide like Oakenfold, and when he's really trying, nobody can pack a club into two discs like Oakenfold either. -Steffan Chirazi.

Review Global Underground 18: Nick Warren In Amsterdam / Nick Warren (mixed by):Amsterdam is the prolific, accomplished Bristol DJ/Way out West producer Nick Warren's fourth mix set for the Global Underground series. The 18th release in this highly successful series, Warren's Amsterdam set is even more progressive than his fantastic Prague, Brazil and Budapest offerings. CD 1 dispels any fears that he may descend into the formulaic by providing deep, dark dance-floor mayhem with various peaks, occasional vocals, precise percussion and tweaked synth waves. It begins softly with the minimal beats and tribal bass of Weekend World Present's "The World" and Ariane's slo-mo ambient "Eternity" before moving into incessant dance groove territory with Soul Mekanik's "I'll Call U" and his very own band's chugging vocal cut, "Intensify". Thereafter, Warren really lets fly with a mid-section that takes in the dirty funk of "Riddem Control" and the gorgeous chords and stuttering percussion of Fluke's hands-in-the-air anthem "Bullet (Cannonball)". CD 2 is ruggedly constructed, no-nonsense big-speaker trance that applies the "I'm Losing Control" hypnosis technique to everything. DJ Gogo's "Ajuna" begins with classic trance elements, a monster bass line and slowly building peaks before taking on a mashed up life of its own. Resistance is futile as he really begins to work your stereo with Futureshock's "Sparc", Nick Hook's majestic trance epic "Enhanced" and Revolt's "Dive Into The Deep". Then he reveals the ace in his pack with the blissed-out atmospherics and driving beat of Halo Vargas' "Future", a reverent, resonant and gloriously funky sweatbash.
