Once again Cream go out of their way to bring the soul back to dance music. Cream Classics Volume 2 builds on the successful first compilation and brings back some of that fantastic old skool. You get a triple CD Box Set with 50 of Creams favourite dance fillers going right back into the 80's; now that's old skool. There is a truly interesting selection of music here that spans a wide spectrum of dance. It's an historical account of tunes from the last couple of decades that helped to define the genre. You won't find a foul tune on any of the CDs, which are all very listenable. You will, however, find some real gems. Going all the way back, New Order's "Blue Monday" is very nostalgic. Some real turn-of-the-decade, defining-times, tracks are included like Orbital's "Chime" and The Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea. There is a definite lean toward funky house on this box-set, which adds some real life to the electronic sounds. [+]

Songs like Jamiroquai's "Space Cowboy" and Moby's "Go" are great dance tunes. There are also some genuine classics to be found here. The Sneaker Pimp's "Spin Spin Sugar" and Armand Van Helden's "The Funk Phenomena" stand out in particular. Some careful thought has gone into the track selection and the mixing is smooth and progressive. The songs tend to get better and better and disk three is quite fantastic. This is a must have for any house fan's collection. Defining tunes that sound as good today blasting from the speakers as they did throughout the 90s. -Jarrod Rendle.

Wax will always have its place of honour, but MIDI controllers, laptops and other forms of technical wizardry continue to inspire DJs throughout the land. In 2004, one of the world's most popular, Sasha, performed extended aural surgery on his Involver release, moulding ten tracks into a softer, vaguely ambient, yet still lethally danceable mélange. But live, the studio tricks didn't translate with such panache. So he built his own tool, a box of circuits, knobs and processors he calls MAVEN, and took it for a test run on Fundacion. The result, ironically, will make you forget all about the fancy gadgetry, since that's not the side of the brain that involves motor function. More house-oriented and playful, this is Sasha's most overtly dance floor-oriented release since 1999's Ibiza. 17 tracks are thoroughly diced and sliced, served up hot with sides of electro ("Electromagnetic") and driving pop (the album-ending one-two punch of Goldfrapp and M83, for instance). Say what you will about DJs without turntables, but no matter how innovative the means, the end goal remains the same: delirious crowds and late-night bliss. In a world where music has broken up into tiny digital pieces, astute artists like Sasha are only adapting. -Matthew Cooke.

Austrians Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, whose smooth and sexy acid jazz has attracted almost as much attention as their curious resemblance to American folksters Simon and Garfunkel, demonstrate their skills on yet another instalment of Studio K7's DJ Kicks series. The mix highlights the best of European trip-hop, acid jazz, and drum and bass, with their own "High Noon" and "Black Baby" mixed with tracks from British trip-hoppers Herbalizer, German technicians Hardfloor, and Viennese weirdo Patrick Pulsinger, among others. Their straightforward mixing is complemented by a heavy dose of studio postproduction but the emphasis here is on track selection rather than technical trickery. " Cheery beats come from the studios of Karminksky Experience and A Forest Mighty Black, while the closing track is an exclusive from the lads themselves in the form of "It Takes A Thief. The only thing wrong with this compilation is the title: "Chillout" hardly seems the right word to describe such a well-balanced collection which, while it includes such relaxing music as Debussy's Clair de lune and Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, also has pieces as wired as Steve Reich's exciting Nagoya Marimbas and Simon Jeffes' Perpetuum Mobile. All the performances are good and have been juxtaposed with some wit: a piece which celebrates nocturnal luminescence, Clair de lune, is followed by a work traditionally performed in darkness, Allegri's Miserere. The aria "Ebbenne andrò lontana" (used in the film Diva) in which a woman reveals that she is going to live on the freezing summit of a mountain, is followed by the slow movement of Vivaldi's "Winter". There are no notes, translations or blurbs, so if you want to find out more about a piece you'll have to pull out the encyclopaedia or get on the net. But that aside, this is a thoroughly enjoyable compilation. -Warwick Thompson.
