In a residency which spanned 84 sets, 8000 records and 1,992,600 beats, Paul Oakenfold cemented both his position as this country's most popular DJ and Cream's as its foremost club. Making the Courtyard area of Liverpool's Nation venue his own, he attracted a weekly crowd which became notorious for its zealous devotion, and was arguably the first British jock to stamp his mark on a club in the manner of American DJ Junior Vasquez at New York's Sound Factory. This double album boasts 28 of the tracks which made Oakenfold's time at Cream so unforgettable, moving smoothly from shiny, melodic house to harder-edged, driving trance beats. Regular favourites such as Underworld's "Dark And Long" and CJ Bolland's "The Prophet" are mixed in the seamless fashion for which the man has become known, and the inclusion of live crowd noise lends the collection a rare immediacy. -Ed Potton.

Nightmares on Wax's DJ Ease is best known for producing a pacific (even comedown) version of hip-hop or downtempo music. Compiling and mixing this album for the DJ Kicks series (which has included rapturously received collections from Stereo MCs and Kruder & Dorfmeister) he presents a subtle mix that moves from hazy breakbeat jazz into leftfield, modern (and politically correct) UK and US hip-hop. Using material from Mo'Wax (the high-velocity delivery of Blackalicious), A Tribe Called Quest, NYs Kenny Dope and Manchester's Grand Central, Ease scratches and fuses an expert selection of alt. hip-hop. Whatever happened to the Stereo MC's? After winning a Brit award in 1993 for their fun and seminal "Connected" album, they seemed to disappear without trace. Seven years later, there's still no sign of a new album, despite repeated assurances over the years to the contrary. Stereo MCs: DJ Kicks may not be the follow-up album we're all waiting for, but it is the next best thing-a non-stop DJ mix from British hip-hop's long-lost sons. As mix albums go, it's a bit of a cracker. There's a rough and ready, funked-up party feel to proceedings, thanks largely to the Stereos' impeccable live mixing and eclectic track selection. In an action-packed hour, Rob B and the Head incorporate everything from old school hip-hop, disco and instrumental funk to jazzy break-beat and obscure orchestral pop. They even find space for a new, three-part Stereo MC's composition, "Rhino" [amazingly, their first new material since 1995]. Like all brilliant mix albums, there's never a dull moment, and each new track is as essential as the last. Great tunes, great mixing and a bunch of new Stereo MCs tracks.
