Review Fundacion: Mixed By Sasha/Limited Edition / Sasha:Wax will always have its place of honour, but MIDI controllers, laptops and other forms of technical wizardry continue to inspire DJs throughout the land. In 2004, one of the world's most popular, Sasha, performed extended aural surgery on his Involver release, moulding ten tracks into a softer, vaguely ambient, yet still lethally danceable mélange. But live, the studio tricks didn't translate with such panache. So he built his own tool, a box of circuits, knobs and processors he calls MAVEN, and took it for a test run on Fundacion. The result, ironically, will make you forget all about the fancy gadgetry, since that's not the side of the brain that involves motor function. More house-oriented and playful, this is Sasha's most overtly dance floor-oriented release since 1999's Ibiza. 17 tracks are thoroughly diced and sliced, served up hot with sides of electro ("Electromagnetic") and driving pop (the album-ending one-two punch of Goldfrapp and M83, for instance). Say what you will about DJs without turntables, but no matter how innovative the means, the end goal remains the same: delirious crowds and late-night bliss. In a world where music has broken up into tiny digital pieces, astute artists like Sasha are only adapting. -Matthew Cooke.

Review DJ Kicks - Erlend Oye: Mixed By Erlend Oye / Erlend Oye:Erlend Oye, lead singer with Norwegian outfit Kings Of Convenience, likes to warble over tracks during his DJ sets. He also likes to tell stories. This, of course, making him an interesting choice for the latest instalment of the eclectic DJ Kicks series. No less than nine cuts here feature his vocal performances, three of which are unreleased records of his own, six of which are cover versions-everything from Opus 3 to Elvis and Morrissey to the Pet Shop Boys. The musical thrust of the compilation lies somewhere between 80s retro-clash rockers and quirky, rock-influenced classics, with tracks by Royksopp, the Rapture, Avenue D and Pheonix all providing more than enough atmospheric dancefloor business. Straddling the line between a DJ mix and a proper artist LP, it makes for a unique compilation that should appeal even to those who don't normally buy mix albums. -Paul Sullivan.

Well here they are, credentials firmly reinstated by their Hed Kandi imprint and suddenly sounding like exactly what you want on your stereo before you hit the tiles of an evening. Complied by Hed honcho himself (Jazz FMs Mark Doyle) this selection of landmark tracks hails from the seminal summer-of-love dancefloor of his own late 1980s night, Freestyle. The mix is vocal, uplifting, at times commercial and always evocative of the best nights out you've ever had. Joe Smooth's "Promised Land" had to be here, as did "Shine On" from Degrees of Motion. "Where Love Lives", "Space Cowboy", Patti Day's "Right Before My Eyes"-you could sing along without the accompaniment. But it doesn't stop there. CD 2 brings the champions of 1990s soul-jazz into the fold, including tracks from Soul II Soul ("Ghetto Heaven") and the Young Disciples ("Apparently Nothing"). A couple of 1970s stormers complete the picture (not forgetting of course the Brand New Heavies' "Back To Love" itself)-and the re-education of all those anal trainspotters with it. -Ruby Shepheard.
