The time has come. Remember those cheesy club-classics your trainspotter mates like to slate while they gen up breaks and beats and nu cool drum & bass? Well here they are, credentials firmly reinstated by their Hed Kandi imprint and suddenly sounding like exactly what you want on your stereo before you hit the tiles of an evening. Complied by Hed honcho himself (Jazz FMs Mark Doyle) this selection of landmark tracks hails from the seminal summer-of-love dancefloor of his own late 1980s night, Freestyle. The mix is vocal, uplifting, at times commercial and always evocative of the best nights out you've ever had. Joe Smooth's "Promised Land" had to be here, as did "Shine On" from Degrees of Motion. "Where Love Lives", "Space Cowboy", Patti Day's "Right Before My Eyes"-you could sing along without the accompaniment. But it doesn't stop there. CD 2 brings the champions of 1990s soul-jazz into the fold, including tracks from Soul II Soul ("Ghetto Heaven") and the Young Disciples ("Apparently Nothing"). A couple of 1970s stormers complete the picture (not forgetting of course the Brand New Heavies' "Back To Love" itself)-and the re-education of all those anal trainspotters with it. -Ruby Shepheard.

Compilation king Mark Doyle chooses to pay back the distant PR favours of Base Bar owner, ex-roofer and general man around (Ibiza) town Jason Bull by lending his selection skills to yet another summertime selection from the White Isle. Although released on Bull's own imprint, unsurprisingly the album is very much in the spirit of albums on Doyle's own Hed Kandi label-both in terms of content and packaging, with two CDs in a neat fold-out digi-pak. With no really big hits emerging from the island through 2001, the selection is competent though perhaps not quite as essential as previous years, with the picks of the album including the balaeric simplicity of Ian Pooley's "Better Life", the eponymous "Mine To Give" from Photek (albeit in remixed form) and the much talked about Danny Tenaglia take of Depeche Mode's "I Feel Loved". -Kingsley Marshall.

The New Year's Eve hangover from their crazy night closing down the Millennium Dome had barely worn off when the Ministry of Sound served up their latest super smorgasbord of floor-fillers. Woe betide anyone feeling a bit fragile, as it's a full-on audio assault from the off. As ever, with their finger firmly on the pulse of the nation's dance-floors, Clubbers Guide to 2001 is a mixture of the latest sounds around as 2000 became 2001 bringing together a soundclash of perennial favourite trance and-its bastard offspring and pretender to the throne-hard house. Hence you get glowstick grooves from the likes of Darude ("Feel The Beat") and Storm ("Storm Animal") taking you to hard house heaven from the likes of Warp Brothers ("Phatt Bass") and Public Domain ("Operation Blade"). With Tall Paul behind the controls, there are plenty of top-notch tunes on offer, including all the best tracks from all the best parties-Hatiras ("Spaced Invader"), Rui Da Silva ("Touch Me") and Santos ("Camels"). One thing we already know about Philly-based songwriter/producer/remixer/vocalist/DJ Mr Duplaix is that he has more than just a touch of class and hence a worthy addition to the DJ Kicks series. His name has been spotted next to productions by artists like Erykah Badu, Sylk 130, Jazzanova, Incognito, Jamiroquai and Eric Benet, and his own tunes, such as "Manhood" and "Sensuality", have been underground and critical successes. This mix LP reflects his deep and soulful approach to a range of music styles, touching on everything from the opening tribal flavours to broken beat, deep house, hip-hop and r&b.
