Review Clubber's Guide to Ibiza / Various Artists:Every summer since the late 1980's, the dance-music market has been flooded with hundreds of dance compilations. Sorting the wheat from the chaff can be a time-consuming and costly purpose, but as a general rule of thumb, compilations from the Ministry of Sound stables are always of a high standard and feature all the biggest tunes. Summer 2000's Clubber's Guide has a genuine summery feel about it and provides a welcome break from the glut of trance compilations that seemed to be clogging up the market, with an album full of up-tempo house anthems like David Morales' "Higher" and full-on carnival tunes like Florian F's "Surreal Brazil". Review The Chillout Sessions / Ladysmith Black Mambazo:The Chillout Sessions is the first remix album of South Africa's biggest selling musical export. It had to happen sooner or later, since Ladysmith Black Mambazo have been combining their traditional acappella iscathamiya roots with other artists' music since their 1997 album Heavenly, with varying degrees of success. The most obvious problem with this is the inevitable loss of richness in their four-part 10-man harmonies in order to make way for a variety of other sounds. The Chillout Sessions mostly avoids this by using songs originally recorded by the group alone. However, in a few cases, the remixers have swamped their voices in a sea of effects, and The Temple of Sound are guilty of this on "Star and the Wiseman". Fortunately the bulk of the remixes are done by Mark Woolford, and his work along with that by South African remixers Nicky Blumenfeld, Dumi Dhlamini and Concord Nkabinde shows more sensitivity, giving the vocals the kind of space they need. Purists who like their Ladysmith as they were should avoid this, but if you are looking for a chillout album with a rootsy flavour, these often shimmeringly aquatic transformations will have considerable appeal. -Jon Lusk.

Review The Annual Millennium Edition: Mixed By Judge Jules & Tall Paul / Judge Jules:In 1999, more than ever before, the sound of the clubs was the sound of the charts. A heady mix of trance, house and big beat, it made for a thumping year, and on the Millennium Edition of Ministry of Sound's Annual, Judge Jules and Tall Paul sum it up over the course of two discs. It's an ambitious undertaking, but the pair pull it off: all the hits are here (really: Chemical Brothers' "Hey Boy Hey Girl", Fatboy Slim's "Right Here Right Now", Moloko's "Sing it Back", Eclipse's "Make Me Love You" and Funkstar De Luxe's take on Bob Marley's "Sun is Shining" all manage to show up on the first half of disc one) and most of them come in new mixes that make them easy to listen to again and again. Breaking up the hits are plenty of coulda-beens, shoulda-beens; Judge Jules' picks-like the mix itself-are a bit smoother than Tall Paul's, but anyone seeking to re-create a great 1999 club night should be more than happy with this collection. -Randy Silver.
