GU have always managed to do well with their comps, representing both the mainstream and the underground with equal emphasis. This new series on the label, Lights Out is dedicated to bringing in the seedier side of clubland, and who better to start things off in a deep, down and dirty manner than Steve Lawler? With two CDs to play with, Lawler doesn't disappoint, pulling together a plethora of ruffed-down, rubbed-up grooves that manage to conjure up exactly the kind of lascivious atmosphere the title suggests. Tunes by Ultra Fine ("Kasso"), Swain and Snell ("Electro Track"), Thick Dick ("Orgasm"), Pimp's "The Light" and Psycho Radio's "In the Underground" make you want to get out on the dance floor and writhe around seductively. Despite its great content and strong marketing hype though, it isn't really offering anything that isn't already out there. Mix CDs seem to be two a penny these days so GU will need to come up with something a little more daring and different than this to really catch people's attention. -Paul Sullivan.

The third in the well respected Serve Chilled series makes a notable stylistic shift from its predecessors with a heavy Balearic leaning, presumably a result of compiler Mark Doyle making his selection in warmer climes. This change of emphasis also extends to the running order, where the focus concerns itself more with flow as opposed to prior selections, which were built up from a foundation of music that literally leapt from the track listing. That said, those already familiar with Hed Kandi outings won' t be disappointed with a consistent quality throughout both two compact discs-highlights of which take the form of Rae and Christian's late-night easy listening "Not Just Anybody" and Nottingham's superb Fug, who offer up the title track from their superb album Ready for Us. -Kingsley Marshall.

Erlend Oye, lead singer with Norwegian outfit Kings Of Convenience, likes to warble over tracks during his DJ sets. He also likes to tell stories. This, of course, making him an interesting choice for the latest instalment of the eclectic DJ Kicks series. No less than nine cuts here feature his vocal performances, three of which are unreleased records of his own, six of which are cover versions-everything from Opus 3 to Elvis and Morrissey to the Pet Shop Boys. The musical thrust of the compilation lies somewhere between 80s retro-clash rockers and quirky, rock-influenced classics, with tracks by Royksopp, the Rapture, Avenue D and Pheonix all providing more than enough atmospheric dancefloor business. Straddling the line between a DJ mix and a proper artist LP, it makes for a unique compilation that should appeal even to those who don't normally buy mix albums. -Paul Sullivan.

If the seemingly endless glut of Ibiza compilations are themed, spiritually, in the flashy, trashy fashion of a Club 18-30 package holiday, Deeper is Hed Kandi main-man Mark Doyle's stab at capturing the much more refined sound of a stolen fortnight in a distant, secluded paradise. Over two discs, Doyle veers into melancholy, soulful deep house waters, choosing tracks for their seamless mood-shifts and consistent stylings, and-rather unusually, in the world of house compilations-presenting his selections out of the mix. This, of course, could be seen as a boon for the aspirant DJ of a deep or progressive bent: with tracks such as the Masters at Work remix of Jaffa's "Elevator" or a beefed-up Deep Dish remix of "Always Remember To Respect And Honour Your Mother" by Faithless' main-man Rollo's Dusted side-project presented clean, this is an ideal place to go track-spotting. As it happens, Doyle isn't entirely averse to the commercial tracks where they fit the mould; Rui Da Silva's "Touch Me"-a No. 1 in 2000-slides slickly in between the more obscure picks. Hed Kandi are developing a reputation as the compilation pick of choice for the more discerning, mature house enthusiast, and Deeper is no exception. -Louis Pattison.

In a residency which spanned 84 sets, 8000 records and 1,992,600 beats, Paul Oakenfold cemented both his position as this country's most popular DJ and Cream's as its foremost club. Making the Courtyard area of Liverpool's Nation venue his own, he attracted a weekly crowd which became notorious for its zealous devotion, and was arguably the first British jock to stamp his mark on a club in the manner of American DJ Junior Vasquez at New York's Sound Factory. This double album boasts 28 of the tracks which made Oakenfold's time at Cream so unforgettable, moving smoothly from shiny, melodic house to harder-edged, driving trance beats. Regular favourites such as Underworld's "Dark And Long" and CJ Bolland's "The Prophet" are mixed in the seamless fashion for which the man has become known, and the inclusion of live crowd noise lends the collection a rare immediacy. -Ed Potton.
