Review What a Crying Shame / Mavericks:What A Crying Shame is more commercial and conventional than its debut predecessor, but every bit as enjoyable. Raul Malo has such a terrific voice that he can wear his broken heart on his sleeve without lapsing into self-pity. In fact, the very act of confessing his hurt seems to charge him with rocking excitement, especially when he gets a melodic hook as juicy as that on the title track or the Roy Orbison tribute, "I Should Have Been True". Trisha Yearwood sings harmony on the saloon ballad "Neon Blue" and the band turns Bruce Springsteen's "All That Heaven Will Allow" into the honky-tonk shuffle it was always meant to be. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review Gravitational Forces / Robert Earl Keen:Robert Earl Keen always delivers his quota of rambling songs. The beautifully crafted Gravitational Forces, however, turns around stories of guys whose ropes have run out. On his first album in more than three years, the singer-songwriter often backs down from the bravado of past blurts like "Whenever Kindness Fails". Not that it's absent in the breakneck remake of his signature "The Road Goes On Forever" or even the cover of Joe Dolce's homebound "Hall of Fame". Yet he dwells more on the troubled side of his drifting characters' lives: the wrong-side-of-the-law losers of "Wild Wind" or the homeless loner of "Not a Drop of Rain". Keen tweaks pavement-bound verities even further on the Dylanesque "Goin' Nowhere Blues" and the deadpan spoken-word title track, which takes out his frustration with a half-day sound check on the club's puzzling decor. If this debut for the Lost Highway label raises Keen's profile even further, the attention will be well deserved. -Rickey Wright.

Review This Is BR549 / BR5-49:On 2001's This Is BR549, five years since their first album, this new-traditionalist band haven't changed their good-natured, no frills, honky-tonkin' Nashville sound. They still blaze through twangy rock like the Everly Brothers' "Price of Love", still spin through hillbilly swing like Chuck Mead's terrific original "Fool of the Century" and they're not afraid to get shamelessly sentimental, as on Gary Bennett's "Different Drum". If there's a misstep, it's a small one: "A Little Good News" is the kind of wishy-washy liberalism better suited to Oprah than the Opry. Yet few young bands wear simple country pleasures as well as BR549. The hyphen may be gone but the heart isn't. -Roy Kasten.
