Review Guitars Cadillacs etc. etc. / Dwight Yoakam:Both the introduction to hard country for an entire generation and a key entry in what became the neo-traditional movement, Dwight Yoakam's debut, Guitars Cadillacs Etc. Etc, was a near-perfect recreation of Buck Owens's Bakersfield sound. "Bury Me" and "Miner's Prayer" are heartfelt homages to Yoakam's real Kentucky roots, while honky-tonks like "South of Cincinnati" remind how many Kentuckians headed to Ohio for good jobs. Most immediately striking, though, are Yoakam's covers-particularly versions of Johnny Horton's "Honky Tonk Man" and Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire"-which subtly tune up the Bakersfield sound with a rock & roll super-charge. -David Cantwell.

Review You Gotta Sin to Get Saved / Maria McKee:Maria McKee's voice-equal parts Dolly and Aretha-had frequently been great, one song at a time, but it wasn't until You Gotta Sin that this former Lone Justice singer was perfect start to finish. McKee's best batch of songs ever are complimented here by the twisted guitar of Jayhawk Gary Louris, which matches McKee, scream for scream, especially on the closing title track where Maria sends packing the guy she's been chasing all along. She's all over the place-"I'm Gonna Soothe You" is soul, "Only Once" honky-tonk, "I Can't Make It Alone" hard-edged pop-but it all works because McKee has finally reconciled her spirituality with her need for the sensual, over-the-top anthem. -David Cantwell.

Review A Ghost Is Born [VINYL] / Wilco:On A Ghost Is Born, Wilco singer, songwriter and supreme commander Jeff Tweedy leads his former alt. country colleagues on another journey towards the leftfield, with Sonic Youth's Jim O'Rourke once again handling co-production duties. But in many ways, it represents a slight backstep from the direction hinted at on its acclaimed successor Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. This is by no means a bad thing. Like Lambchop's best work, it's an album that's full of clever experimentalism and understated studio trickery, yet one where Wilco's very human and very organic core is highlighted, most likely because of Tweedy's dusty past with alt. country mavericks Uncle Tupelo. To Wilco's credit, the songs on A Ghost Is Born never suffer from over-production or wilful contrivance. Even on a 10-minute epic such as "Spiders", they manage to keep the listener's interest with a simple, driving rhythm and gradual layers of guitars, before the song bursts forth in the fourth minute. It's an extended jam, sure, but it's never dull-a remarkable feat in itself. In fact, A Ghost Is Born harks back to Wilco's altogether excellent second album, Being There, an innovative and original take on country rock and pop.
