Review On Stage / Tal Farlow:Farlow was undoubtedly the fastest, most thoughtful and swinging guitarist to come out of Bebop. By the time of this 1976 album he had settled into a mature mainstream style, playing with exquisite beauty on ballads and with fire on the stompers. It would be hard to find a group of players who had better musical taste than Farlow and his cohorts here. But if that makes them sound prim, be assured that few people drive harder than the players on this classic album. Classic? This was one of only two albums that Farlow had recorded in 17 years. Here he celebrates his return by using Red Norvo [in whose trio Farlow and Charlie Mingus had worked 20 years earlier], Hank Jones on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Jake Hanna on drums. Norvo [hear him on "The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else"], Farlow and Jones rarely soloed better than they do here. They ruffle the collars of several standards but their blazing version of "Lullaby of Birdland" is outstanding. -Steve Voce.
