Review The Poll Winners / Barney Kessel:In the 1950s, guitarist Barney Kessel, drummer Shelly Manne, and bassist Ray Brown scored consistently high in polls conducted by jazz fans (for example, in publications such as Downbeat, Metronome, and Playboy). As a result, producer Lester Koenig at Contemporary decided that it was time to record the three men as a trio. The result was The Poll Winners, a 1957 collection of popular standards and one Kessel original. In lesser hands, this project could have been a tasteless exercise in commercialism. Fortunately, The Poll Winners is the occasion for a fresh, inspired performance of integrity and near-telepathic communication. The inheritor of the Charlie Christian tradition, Kessel-who was also raised in Oklahoma- reveals himself as the consummate swing and bop artist in tracks such as "Jordu" and his own "Minor Mood". The self-taught Kessel also shows his successful absorption of the modern, West Coast performance school, as well as a blues-tinted orientation here and there ("Mean To Me"). The piano-less format allows plenty of room for Kessel and company to blow within single notes and across modulated chords. Mindful of the needs of his fellow players, Kessel's closely-knit interactions with prime-time sidemen Manne and Brown assumes a more relaxed profile in a classic reading of Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll". The chemistry extends to lyrical episodes such as "It Could Happen To You" and "You Go To My Head". Review The Best of the Concord Years / Tito Puente:This two-CD compilation of Tito Puente's prodigious 1983-1996 Concord run is a superb introduction to "The King of Timbal" in his prime. His Latin Jazz Ensemble and Orchestra included stalwarts Sonny Bravo (piano), Jimmy Frisaura (trumpet), Mario Rivera (saxophone), Bobby Rodriguez (bass), and percussionists Josi Madera and Josi "Papo" Rodriguez. Many notable guests sound in as well: pianists Jorge Dalto, Rebeca Maulesn-Santana, Hilton Ruiz and George Shearing, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, saxophonist Phil Woods, violinist Alfredo de la Fi, and percussionists Francisco Aguabella and John Santos. Jazz standards dominate (by Coltrane, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Paul Desmond, Ellington, Mingus, Monk, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, Strayhorn), with selected pop gems (e. g. , Earth, Wind and Fire's "Sun Goddess," and "On Broadway"), and compositions by George Shearing ("Consternation," "Lullaby of Birdland") and Puente himself ("Ran Kan Kan," "Oye Como Va," "Machito Forever," "Mambo King, "Picadillo al lo Puente," "Fiesta a la King," "Alluya"). Review Sentimental Journey: The Girl Singer and Her New Big Band / Rosemary Clooney:Rosemary Clooney's renaissance on Concord continues with Sentimental Journey, her 20th-plus disc for the label. This set of standards and two new set pieces recalls her before "Come On A My House" while asserting her ongoing strength at 73. Clooney moves from various shades of romance ("That Old Black Magic", "Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe") to a display of comic timing ("Ya Got Class") that suggests she could've developed a second career on the "legitimate" stage. Supple solos by Matt Cowan (tenor sax) and bandleader Matt Catingub (alto) bring further depth to the likes of "And The Angels Sing" and "You Belong To Me. " The single most affecting track, though, is an "I'll Be Around" that finds Clooney accompanied by Catingub's solo piano-a finer tribute to Frank Sinatra, who defined the song on In The Wee Small Hours, than the two stolid odes to him and the craft. -Rickey Wright.
