Review Timeless / Sergio Mendes:As you might expect, Timeless isn't your parents' Sergio Mendes. Take "Mais Que Nada," the opener from that topselling staple of post-60s, post-bossa, near-kitsch Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits. Here it's no simple, slinky groove. The Black-Eyed Peas are along for the bumpin' ride. What it amounts to is the same intercultural collision that happened when bossa nova met jazz and pop via Stan Getz's tenor sax, except here the meeting is between the lounge and, presumably, the street. John Legend and India. Arie keep the session on a downtempo, neo Brazilian vibe on "Please Baby Don't" and the title track (respectively). Once those are tunes end, though, it's back to the bump and the beats and the irresistible party vibe of the set. Don't fret, though, as the Peas keep things light enough to trigger innocent headbobs and chilled out dance steps. Just as you might hear Timeless and agree that it ain't your parents' Sergio, your parents can also hear will. [+]i. am's and the Peas's pivotal roles and say that it's not their kids' Black-Eyed Peas, either -Andrew Bartlett.

Review Bolton Swings Sinatra / Michael Bolton:Rod Stewart greased the wheels, and now everybody's lining up for a ride. Bolton Swings Sinatra, like Barry Manilow's The Greatest Songs of the Fifties before it, is an obvious bid to snare some of the spotlight Stewart's expertly executed Great American Songbook series generated. A recap for those who have yet to crack the time capsule: the mood of these discs is forcibly retro (nobody shows up for a CD cover shoot without a suit jacket), the pulse romantic. So if the big-belting Bolton is not exactly a natural fit-here's an artist you wouldn't go out of your way to call suave, a major prerequisite for marching along in this recycled hit parade-he's not wholly out of his element, either. Bolton can swing Sinatra, sort of. Classics like "Fly Me To the Moon," "Summer Wind," and "I've Got You Under my Skin" sneak up on the listener and reveal a quiet reverance for the departed chairman of the board; only on "My Funny Valentine" does Bolton-esque over-singing threaten to spoil the brew. "The Second Time Around," a duet with Nicollette Sheridan, also doesn't overreach, landing on the ears like an open love letter. And the arrangements work consistently. Still, there are those who will roll their eyes and call this project too ambitious, too cheeky, and they may have a point. What next, they might reasonably ask: Richard Marx Rocks Elvis? Review (Jazz Impressions Of) A Boy Named Charlie Brown / Vince Guaraldi Trio:The jazz trio recordings that made up most of West Coast pianist Vince Guaraldi's output often leaned more in the pop direction. Guaraldi had played with Cal Tjader and Woody Herman, scored a niche with Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus, and hit a commercial high point with his melodic melodrama "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," but he will forever be tied to his score for the cartoon A Boy Named Charlie Brown. These performances are memorable for the program they set out to accomplish. The bright little skirmish of "Linus and Lucy" is the perfect accompaniment to these mimetic characters. "Blue Charlie Brown" contains some catchy piano soloing from Guaraldi. "Baseball Theme" works perfectly, as does the samba "Pebble Beach" and the Chaplinesque rag, "Schroeder. " -John Swenson.

Review Ray Sings, Basie Swings / Ray Charles:To fake or not to fake: That is the question consumers must answer for themselves in assessing this feat of aural Photoshopping: an "imaginary concert" created by combining recently discovered soundboard tapes of Ray Charles's vocals from a mid-'70s European show and newly recorded backing by the Count Basie Orchestra-the "ghost band," still on the road 22 years after Count's passing. Charles is in exceptional voice, singing the heck out of standards like "How Long Has This Been Going On?," Genius classics like "Busted," and pop covers like Melanie's "Look What They've Done to My Song. " His performance is a thrilling corrective to forgettable posthumous albums like Genius Loves Company, designed to cash in on the new audience created for him by the movie Ray. But as competently as the Basie band fill in the blanks under the direction of Bill Hughes, with Joey DeFrancesco guesting on organ, most of the new arrangements are rather pallid, and the ensemble lacks the personality of both the Basie orchestra and Charles's best groups. And as attractive as Ray Sings, Basie Swings may be for the casual listener, the gimmickry will appall serious fans, particularly since neither Charles nor Basie-who never collaborated in life-was around to lend his approval. Review Most Requested Songs / Susannah McCorkle:Susannah McCorkle picked the 14 tracks on Most Requested Songs, a 2001 compilation of previous recordings, by considering the requests from her cabaret audiences. The selections fit into three general categories: great standards by the likes of Gershwin and Porter ("They Can't Take That Away from Me", "Easy to Love"), Brazilian pop (including the hypnotic "Waters of March", which became her signature song) and those quirky little songs that capture the listener with their intelligence and heart ("Quality Time"). It's a beautiful tribute to the well-loved singer, but one accompanied with sadness. Her long-time recording label declined to release a new album in 2001, opting instead for this compilation. She participated fully in the project (even writing the liner notes), but the inevitable disappointment along with the cancellation of her usual autumn gig at New York's Algonquin Hotel were widely speculated to have contributed to her tragic suicide in May of that year. -David Horiuchi.
