Review Winter Chill Vol.3 / Various Artists:Hed Kandi have been intensely prolific since their inception a couple of years ago. As a consequence, some of their attractively packaged compilations have frankly failed to hit the spot. Their Winter Chill series though has progressed at a slightly slower pace and has subsequently managed to keep up a respectable standard. The musical criteria for these collections, as stated on the sleeve notes inside, is "heavy beats, soaring strings and an aching female vocal". The listener is thus presented with a range of song-based tracks that come with a down-tempo/trip-hop and an often dark or glacial feel; a refreshing contrast to other "feel-good" Ibiza-style chill-out compilations that can often feel cloying and sickly. The choice of tunes here is on point. The first CD is the lightest, and begins with the Dusted remix of Faithless's "Evergreen" and moves horizontally through relaxed grooves courtesy of acts such as the ever-charming Goldfrapp, Norwegian mood alchemists Royksopp, US poet Ursula Rucker, European kitsch merchants De Phazz and London live-electronic outfit Mescalito. CD 2 gets a little bit darker, starting out with tracks by Depeche Mode and Lamb and ending with some well-chosen oddities from Mr Hermano and Emiliana Tortini. It's ultimately a mixed bag, but maintains a neat balance of musical coolness and emotional warmth. If you want an album that'll put a warm glow in your icy living room this winter, look no further. Review Lights Out Vol.1: Mixed By Steve Lawler / Steve Lawler:GU have always managed to do well with their comps, representing both the mainstream and the underground with equal emphasis. This new series on the label, Lights Out is dedicated to bringing in the seedier side of clubland, and who better to start things off in a deep, down and dirty manner than Steve Lawler? With two CDs to play with, Lawler doesn't disappoint, pulling together a plethora of ruffed-down, rubbed-up grooves that manage to conjure up exactly the kind of lascivious atmosphere the title suggests. Tunes by Ultra Fine ("Kasso"), Swain and Snell ("Electro Track"), Thick Dick ("Orgasm"), Pimp's "The Light" and Psycho Radio's "In the Underground" make you want to get out on the dance floor and writhe around seductively. Despite its great content and strong marketing hype though, it isn't really offering anything that isn't already out there. Mix CDs seem to be two a penny these days so GU will need to come up with something a little more daring and different than this to really catch people's attention. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Global Underground: New York / Paul Oakenfold:Arguably the most famous DJ in the world, circa 1999, and certainly one of the most influential across all fields of music, London mix-master Paul Oakenfold enjoys his first Global Underground release in America with a two-disc set that goes to the farthest corners of modern dance-club music. Oakenfold (who has remixed and spun for U2 and co-produced the Happy Mondays) obviously has a phenomenal record collection. Using the hues and vibes of Manhattan, Oakenfold weaves together a landmark house set for those who have never heard one. The first disc is smattered with trancey house grooves, with swirls of funk thrown in for good measure, thanks to Solar Stone's "Flood" and an effortless high-energy mix that allows brief recuperative moments before once again taking off à la the segue from Lustral's "Everytime" into Miro's "Paradise. " The second disc sees Oakenfold playing around with some spacier jungle flavours, such as Ambrosia's "In Your Arms", before enjoying a break-beat-fuelled journey through Talisman & Hudson's "Leave Planet Earth", then effortlessly easing on into trance-house warmth again with Albion's "Air". New York shows that Oakenfold is certainly one of the smoothest operators behind the decks today. Unfazed by the confusing sub-genres of electronica, Oakenfold fondly embraces them all, fashioning sets of rich diversity.
