The only thing wrong with this compilation is the title: "Chillout" hardly seems the right word to describe such a well-balanced collection which, while it includes such relaxing music as Debussy's Clair de lune and Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, also has pieces as wired as Steve Reich's exciting Nagoya Marimbas and Simon Jeffes' Perpetuum Mobile. All the performances are good and have been juxtaposed with some wit: a piece which celebrates nocturnal luminescence, Clair de lune, is followed by a work traditionally performed in darkness, Allegri's Miserere. The aria "Ebbenne andrò lontana" (used in the film Diva) in which a woman reveals that she is going to live on the freezing summit of a mountain, is followed by the slow movement of Vivaldi's "Winter". There are no notes, translations or blurbs, so if you want to find out more about a piece you'll have to pull out the encyclopaedia or get on the net. But that aside, this is a thoroughly enjoyable compilation. -Warwick Thompson.

Let the celebrations begin as Now That's What I Call Music has reached its 50th volume, a landmark that few other pop compilations can ever expect to reach. From back in the early 1980s, before CDs were even invented, a compilation emerged featuring current music by the original artists (a rare thing in those days) with a trendy-looking pig poking its head out on the glitzy cover. In 2001, Now 50 is a far cry from its shoulder-padded ancestor but the ideas and pop/crossover sensibility is exactly the same. CD1 runs like the four seasons with dance pop (such as Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head") blossoming into hip-hop and R&B (City High's "What Would You Do?"), heating up with rock & indie (AAF's "Smooth Criminal") and then cooling off with a series of sweet ballads (Gabrielle's "Don't Need the Sun to Shine"). CD2 is fun all the way with a few big dance tunes such as Iio's "Rapture" and the Supermen Lover's "Starlight", followed by some of those lingering hip-hop/R&B numbers such as Eve's "Let Me Blow Your Mind" and Mary J Blige's "Family Affair". There really are too many great songs to mention as the Now people have outdone themselves in putting together one of the best pop line-ups ever, befitting of the age and stature of the old duchess, Now That's What I Call Music. -David Trueman.

When two of the UK's leading DJs get together to play the cream of dance music from 1996, it's a recipe for success. Disc One features Pete Tong's favourite tunes from the year, and demonstrates his exceptional taste: there's Stretch 'n' Vern's "I'm Alive" mixed by Fatboy Slim and "Insomnia" by Faithless, but best is the huge dancefloor anthem "Professional Widow" by Tori Amos, remixed by Armand Van Helden. Tong's style and taste are uplifting and funky, with a slightly harder edge than Boy George, who mixes Disc Two. Kicking things off with the Prodigy, he slips neatly into the Underworld classic, "Born Slippy. Its combination of all that makes the British pop charts great is its winning formula, and one that it certainly doesn't stray from here. On the pure pop front there are scene leaders Robbie Williams ("Rock DJ"), Ronan Keating ("Life Is A Rollercoaster"), Steps ("Stomp") and Britney Spears ("Lucky"); and keeping the rock flag flying are U2 ("Beautiful Day"), David Gray ("Babylon") and Bon Jovi ("It's My Life"). The two leading lights of the dance scene-2-Step and trance-are well represented with Architects ("Body Groove") and Craig David ("7 Days") on a 2-Step trip and trance masters Storm ("Time To Burn") and Darude ("Feel The Beat") There is also a smattering of R&B thrown in for good measure courtesy of Sisqo ("Unleash The Dragon") and Melanie B ("Tell Me").
