Since its inception in the early 1970s, disco has been the most derided form of dance music, dismissed by intellectuals, snobs and tastemakers as lightweight dancefloor pap. But mystifyingly, the modern party tunes that fill out Disco-Kandi 3 prove that while its critics are legion, the genre of disco has seldom been in ruder health. Thanks, perhaps, to the huge resurgence of the artform in Europe; a fair proportion of Disco Kandi 3 is comprised of fresh tracks, imported direct from the continent-in the sleevenotes, Hed Kandi compiler Mark Doyle recalls hearing the uplifting "Sugartown" by Dutch producer Hakan Lidbos in a club in Amsterdam, and decided it had to be on the compilation. Doyle's favourite labels loom fairly large-Defected Records register with six tracks, most notably, the gorgeous, soulful disco epiphany of First Choice's "The Player" and the cackling Latin rattle of Loletta Holloway's "Dreamin'". Where previous Disco-Kandi compilations offered something of a wind-down, though, it seems that here, Doyle's having too much fun; the second disc turns up the heat with Alan Braxe & Fred Falke's Ibiza classic "Intro", and by the close, he's dropping classics such as Sonz Of Soul's "Race Of Survival" into the mix. Lightweight dancefloor pap? Hardly-Disco Kandi 3 is the sound of hardcore dancefloor hedonism, and if the snobs can't handle that, it's their loss. - Louis Pattison.

If your ears have been treated to the first three compilations in this series, it should come as no surprise to hear that the music emanating from your speakers will be damn sexy house. The mix is accessible-think Moloko's "Time Is Now" or a gospel influenced mix of De'Lacy's 1995 hands in the air classic "Hideaway". It's also melancholic (when the Basement Jaxx re-cycle chords from Remedy's "Stop 4 Love" to remix "We Don't Have to Be Alone" by Cooly's Hot box), funky (thanks to Kenny Dope's "Can You Handle It" and a collaboration between Groove Armada and Fat Boy Slim on "I See You Baby") and full of fitting surprises (Masters at Work's afro-beat tribute to Fela Kuti, "MAW Expensive"). Overall, Nu Kool 4 is a compilation with its finger on the pulse of all things new and cool-but with a distinct nod to sounds that always have been. -Ruby Sheppard.

Nightmares on Wax's DJ Ease is best known for producing a pacific (even comedown) version of hip-hop or downtempo music. Compiling and mixing this album for the DJ Kicks series (which has included rapturously received collections from Stereo MCs and Kruder & Dorfmeister) he presents a subtle mix that moves from hazy breakbeat jazz into leftfield, modern (and politically correct) UK and US hip-hop. Using material from Mo'Wax (the high-velocity delivery of Blackalicious), A Tribe Called Quest, NYs Kenny Dope and Manchester's Grand Central, Ease scratches and fuses an expert selection of alt. hip-hop. At times he layers tunes which themselves sample other tunes to create a complex mesh of meaning and reference. Compilation king Mark Doyle chooses to pay back the distant PR favours of Base Bar owner, ex-roofer and general man around (Ibiza) town Jason Bull by lending his selection skills to yet another summertime selection from the White Isle. Although released on Bull's own imprint, unsurprisingly the album is very much in the spirit of albums on Doyle's own Hed Kandi label-both in terms of content and packaging, with two CDs in a neat fold-out digi-pak. With no really big hits emerging from the island through 2001, the selection is competent though perhaps not quite as essential as previous years, with the picks of the album including the balaeric simplicity of Ian Pooley's "Better Life", the eponymous "Mine To Give" from Photek (albeit in remixed form) and the much talked about Danny Tenaglia take of Depeche Mode's "I Feel Loved". -Kingsley Marshall.
