In order to make this attractive two-CD compilation set, the BBC has raided the EMI and Virgin Classics back catalogues and put together a selection of pieces which are frequently heard at the Proms, or have some special Proms connection. Falling neatly into the latter category is John Tavener's ecstatic piece for cello and strings The Protecting Veil, which was a BBC Proms commission in 1989, here performed by its dedicatee Steven Isserlis. The collection finishes with a live Last Night recording (including the sound of party-poppers, whistles and sirens) of "Land of Hope and Glory" Wood's Fantasia on British Sea Songs, "Jerusalem" and "Rule, Britannia!" with Bryn Terfel. Before this the collection offers Jacqueline du Pré playing the opening of Elgar's Cello Concerto, Neville Marriner conducting the opening chorus of Bach's Magnificat and the overture to Candide brilliantly played by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Sometimes the programming is a little samey in tone-Carmina Burana followed by Fanfare for the Common Man, for example-but overall this is a fine collection of well-performed excerpts. -Warwick Thompson.

The Best Air Guitar Album in the World. Ever! should not be mistaken for a "greatest rock album ever" kind of affair as it would cause monumental arguments as to why it includes Robbie Williams but not Led Zeppelin. The songs chosen by Queen guitarist Brian May are all there because they make the fingers start flexing, the head to start banging, and force you to assume the imaginary position of a pouting rock guitarist on stage in front of thousands of screaming worshipers. The first disc kicks of with Queen's heavy blues-rock anthem "Tie Your Mother Down" and ends with one of the most epic guitar solos ever recorded, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" which sadly appears as an abridged version. Highlights along the way are the brooding intro to Bowie's "Rebel Rebel", the Surfaris "Wipeout" and seminal guitar moment from beardy rock god Eric Clapton on "Layla". Disc two has a few more inclusions from recent years with Robbie Williams' storming "Let Me Entertain You", Weezer's "Hash Pipe" and Wheatus's "Teenage Dirtbag" alongside such classics as Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" and Motorhead's "Ace of Spades". So in summary there's no "Stairway" but plenty of guitar hooks, stabs and widdles to keep you prancing like Kiss while sounding like Beavis and Butthead. -Georgina Collins.

Recorded in Sydney, Australia, in 1998, Digweed's mix envelops a multitude of dance styles and coats them all with his effortless, lengthy, pace-building method. Few DJs could move so smoothly from the sunrise tranquillity of Fortunato & Montresor's "Imagine" to the busyness of Danny Tenaglia's "Elements," let alone Fatma Morgana's "Apache Spur" to the franticness of Crystal Method's "Keep Hope Alive. He might have made his name as one of the founding fathers of electroclash, but Montreal-based DJ Tiga's contribution to the DJ Kicks series proves he's got a range and talent to outlive the genre. Rather than choosing the obvious genre-defining tracks, he's hunted out some stellar remixers from the field of punk-funk and electro-pop: there's Adult twisting Jolly Music's "Radio Jolly" into a gothic pulse, DFA recasting Le Tigre as shrill disco maidens on "Deceptacon", and Trevor Jackson adopting his Playgroup guise to reinvent Chromeo's "You're So Gangsta" as a digital funk number, vibrating with stuttering electronic pin-drops, and splashed with a comfy burst of saxophone. Tiga is, it had to be said, still one for the occasional 1980s fashion crime-resurrecting Stevie V's "Dirty Cash" for the new millennium is a thoroughly gruesome idea, and the very idea should be put wherever they put Flock of Seagulls. But he makes a remarkably good case for the rehabilitation of many of the hallmarks of the decade of excess: take Codec & Flexor's "Time Has Changed", for example, which revisits the mood of electronic melancholy once perfected by Depeche Mode but casts it within a thoroughly modern-sounding framework of glitchy futurism. -Louis Pattison.

More than just another dip in the ocean of downbeat music, Ministry of Sound's Late Night Sessions includes a little more thought than just banging in a load of Air and "At the River" clones. Starting off with Royksopp's mid-tempo "Eple", CD1's highlights include Bent's beautiful but not drippy "Magic Love", Ian Brown's "F. E. A. R" and the fantastic soul-funk finale of the Blackbyrd's "Rock Creek Park" and epic "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun". The first four songs of CD2 couldn't be more different or more welcomed, highlighting the attention that has been put into the track listing; Alicia Keys to DJ Shadow to the Free Association to old Primal Scream. Featuring fringe favourites such as Earl Zinger, Bonobo and Tim "Love" Lee, it uncovers artists waiting for their turn at the big time and places them alongside heavyweights such as Underworld, Faithless and Groove Armada.
