When Never, Never Land was originally released in 2003 it was met, like Psyence Fiction before it, with almost equal amounts of critical acclaim and critical carping. Considering the fact that the sound had changed almost beyond recognition due to the absence of DJ Shadow-the new album lacks the raw drum & bass energy of the Drums of Death tracks, but at the same time is freed from such random additions as half-developed intros and spoken ads for obscure American esoterica-UNKLE's new baby was never going to keep everyone happy. Never, Never Land easily rivals Psyence Fiction in both quality and star power (featuring as it does Jarvis Cocker, Brian Eno (both uncredited), Ian Brown (ex-Stone Roses), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and Robert del Naja (Massive Attack)), despite UNKLE's departure from their previous major label. This parting of the ways brought UNKLE (now chiefly James Lavelle and Richard File) to their new home at Global Underground, prompting a US release of Never, Never Land and this limited-edition box set, which includes a second CD, featuring (a few) unreleased tracks and (many) remixes, by the likes of Sasha, Hybrid and Anagram. One of the album's definite stand-out tracks, the single "Reign", features Ian Brown and Mani, both formerly of the Stone Roses, in their first collaboration since that band split. If the seemingly endless glut of Ibiza compilations are themed, spiritually, in the flashy, trashy fashion of a Club 18-30 package holiday, Deeper is Hed Kandi main-man Mark Doyle's stab at capturing the much more refined sound of a stolen fortnight in a distant, secluded paradise. Over two discs, Doyle veers into melancholy, soulful deep house waters, choosing tracks for their seamless mood-shifts and consistent stylings, and-rather unusually, in the world of house compilations-presenting his selections out of the mix. This, of course, could be seen as a boon for the aspirant DJ of a deep or progressive bent: with tracks such as the Masters at Work remix of Jaffa's "Elevator" or a beefed-up Deep Dish remix of "Always Remember To Respect And Honour Your Mother" by Faithless' main-man Rollo's Dusted side-project presented clean, this is an ideal place to go track-spotting. As it happens, Doyle isn't entirely averse to the commercial tracks where they fit the mould; Rui Da Silva's "Touch Me"-a No. 1 in 2000-slides slickly in between the more obscure picks. Hed Kandi are developing a reputation as the compilation pick of choice for the more discerning, mature house enthusiast, and Deeper is no exception. -Louis Pattison.

For the third instalment of their ever-popular trance compilation series, Ministry of Sound stick to the old adage -"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". So, once more they have trance-meister Ferry Corsten (AKA System F) at the helm, setting the controls for the heart of the dance floor and putting his foot to the floor on the smoke machine and the strobe lights. As with the previous two volumes it's packed with floor fillers from start to finish, including chart-toppers from Chicane and Fragma, as well as instant classics from the likes of Onephatdeeva and Azzido Da Bass. In the privacy of your own home, it's never going to be as good as blasting out of the PA in the midst of a hot sweaty loved-up crowd, but it's perfect fare for getting ready for a big night out. There are a few duff tracks in there-the much overrated Flickman's "Sound of Bamboo" for one, but if it's huge throbbing trance tunes you're after, then your quest is at an end. -Helen Marquis.

Straddling the gulf between the pop and dance market, Now Dance 2001 manages to combine the best of both worlds without sounding like the cobbled together hotchpotch it so easily could have been. That said, the line between the two of them has become increasingly blurred as dance music has crossed over into the mainstream, fighting for chart space with Britney Spears, S-Club 7 and the like. Succinctly put, Now Dance 2001 combines the dance end of the pop market and the pop end of the dance market. So popsters such as The Spice Girls ("Holler"), Robbie Williams ("Rock DJ"), Billie Piper ("Something Deep Inside"), Melanie C ("I Turn To You") and Geri Halliwell ("Bag It Up") sit happily alongside dance luminaries such as Fatboy Slim ("Sunset (Bird Of Prey)"), Modjo ("Lady (Hear Me Tonight)"), Spiller ("Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)") and Paul Van Dyk ("The Riddle (Tell Me Why)") without any evidence of the divide that usually separates these two genres. Every great chart-topping dance hit from 2000 is present along with a great selection of up-tempo pop tunes.
