Towards the end of 2000, Hard House began to steadily shoulder trance out of the way to become THE sound of UK dancefloors. For her part, Lisa Lashes has been one of the DJs at the forefront of this sonic renaissance and here she presents us with the tunes that have helped produce this quite sudden but seismic shift. The contribution of late old school guru Tony De Vit (usually acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of the hard house sound) is acknowledged with a Paul Janes remix of his classic track, "The Dawn". Lisa then takes us through a whole army of contemporary floor-slammers from the likes of Fergie ("Deception"), Gridlock 3000 ("Fantastic Thing"), E-Trax ("Let's Rock"), Nick Sentience ("Freedom") and Ms Lashes herself ("Lookin' Good" and "Unbelievable"). As collections of hard house go, it's gonna be difficult to top this rampant journey from one of the scene's true luminaries. -Paul Sullivan.

Although titled The Chillout Annual 2002, 2001 was the year of the chill-out compilation, getting off to a fine start with The Chillout Sessions, which spawned a plethora of imitations, some good, some bad. It seems the years of larging it had finally taken their toll on clubbers, who went in search of something a bit more calming and, well, chilled. The Ministry of Sound round off 2001 with The Chillout Annual 2002, a downbeat companion to their traditional clubber's bible, The Annual 2002. All the big names in the genre are present-Groove Armada, Zero 7, Lemon Jelly, Blue States, Kinobe, Nightmares on Wax and Bent, as well as down-tempo numbers from those normally associated with more up-tempo fare, such as Chemical Brothers, Faithless and Underworld. There are even the seemingly essential couple of token indie tracks from Badly Drawn Boy and Radiohead, which to be honest aren't really that welcome, but don't detract from proceedings that much. -Helen Marquis.

Compilations of this kind featuring artists of the moment such as Paul Van Dyk, Oliver Lieb and Michael Moog pick at the difference between music for your stereo and music for the DJ. Almost every track in this double-CD box set was a monster club hit in 1999-designed for late-night sessions and dancefloor pressure. Although Judge Jules is a technically proficient mixer and avoids the monotony of most 4/4 tech-trance with a few masterful tempo changes, at home they sound pretty much the same from track to track. Even those that begin with complex layers of shimmying house and soul segue into furious "trance nation" explosions. From Basement Jaxx's "Jump 'n' Shout", this very cutely packaged collection really begins to ignite a powerful groove, moving away from the bland, bouncing, grinning rhythms of trance to funk things up with ragga and electro. A few songs are worth being played over and over again especially "That Sound", "Back to the Funk" and "Feeling this way", but the full intoxicating power of a track like "Iguana" won't be apparent unless you're in a pulsating room with a few hundred gyrating strangers burning up the dancefloor. -Felix Obi Zuze.

The intention behind the Served Chilled series is sketched in the sleeve notes, with the two CDs of music intended as a soundtrack for those late-night, post-club or lazing-about-the house sessions. Mark Doyle, the curator of the series, earned his diploma of chill through his four-hour broadcasts at Jazz FM, which occupied the slot that crosses Saturday night to Sunday morning. The tracklisting pretty much speaks for itself, 28 tracks culled from leading artists-Groove Armada, Nightmares on Wax, Thievery Corporation supported by occasional obscurities-check the super fly instrumentation of "Beat Experience" from Finland's Pepe Deluxe and the effervescent rhythm section of Ballistic Brothers "Marching On". Highlights however come from Ollie Buckwell's ever-impressive Dorado stable, offering Matt Winn's classic "Garden Of Earthly Delights" and "Freedom From Pity" where initially understated hammonds and Phil Hudson's meandering acoustic guitar work provide an airy mix within which Jhelisa's morose lyric is set adrift. -Kingsley Marshall.
