The Classic Chill Out Album Vol 2's predecessor is set to become the number one selling chill out collection of 2001 so the second instalment has much to live up to. Unfortunately I fear the chill out bubble has well and truly burst and this is just a last ditch attempt to milk the genre for as much as it's worth-cue the sound of barrels being scraped. A cursory glance at the tracklisting confirms my suspicions-Dido, Moby, William Orbit and Goldfrapp all make obligatory and uninspired appearances, although, to be honest, these are the high points. Wait until the dull jazz of Martin Taylor or Stan Getz snoozes by, Sade underwhelms you with the soporific "No Ordinary Love" or the realisation kicks in that you're listening to "Crocketts Theme" from Jan Hammer. Even worse, cringe to various bastardisations of real classical music, where Vivaldi, Holst and Beethoven are all given a New Age re rub with disastrous results. Headliners is an energetic compilation of progressive trance and hard-edged house from the Ministry label mixed live at The Gallery by DJ Tall Paul Newman. Tall Paul's residency at this club has bought him a huge global following and listening to this album you will see why. The double-CD format allows Paul to experiment with a diverse selection of dance music while keeping the sounds tough and progressive. Opening with Laurent Garnier's "The Man with the Red Face" the album builds and builds with Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa's "Afrika Shox" and Green Velvet Flash's "Timo Maas Dub" featuring on the first CD. On the second CD, the mood leans towards a more hard-edged sound creating a live dance floor atmosphere, highlights include Darude's classic Ibiza anthem "Sandstorm" and Tall Paul's own "Freebase". Designed for lazy afternoon listening and balmy summer evenings, Beach House 2 features a gloriously sunny selection of deep house gems. Relaxing après-club seems to be in vogue for 2001 as The Chillout Session Vol. 2 is just one in a spate of down-tempo house compilations for those quieter moments. Not that this is a bad thing when so much of the intricacies in the production of dance music are lost under the thud of a bass drum down the local night club. The first disc has many a beautiful song with the lion's share of soulful grooves in comparison to the mechanical hooks of the second disc. It starts with the radio friendly "Here With Me" by Dido which is the perfect opener, setting the tone and leaving all pretensions aside for the rest of the eclectic mix. A bold choice is the Afterlife mix of Jakatta's "American Dream" which also featured on the hugely successful Volume 1 in its original state but is more than welcome as it segues to the blissful Zero 7 ("Give it Away"). Things liven up a bit with the funked up breaks of Rae & Christian featuring vocalist Veba on "Spellbound" which blends into the twisty Pepe Deluxe ("Before You Leave"). Disc 2 is a selection of alternate mixes of dance floor fillers and old classics alike with veteran names such as Underworld ("Jumbo") and Faithless ("Drifting Away") slotted amidst Schiller's "Das Glockenspiel" and Santos' "Hear My Soul". If The Chillout Sessions Vol. 1 was an experiment (which worked well), then Volume 2 has developed the perfect formula. [+]

The first in Ministry Of Sound's huge-selling Trance Nation series, this volume sees System F man Ferry Corsten tackling a set that, in hindsight, is as eclectic as it is accomplished. It's easy to sneer as the compilation kicks with Robert Miles' trite Euro-cheese anthem "Children", but Corsten, eager to blow his own trumpet, quickly jams it into his very own "Out Of The Blue"-a track that can claim to be trance's very own "Blue Monday". Underworld's "Dark And Long" and Lucid's "I Can't Help Myself" prove the first disc's highlights, but disc two takes us from the sublime to the ridiculous-Paul Oakenfold's remix of Mansun's "Wide Open Space" fronts a veritable trance hit parade, with tracks from Faithless, Paul Van Dyk, BT, and let's not forget the omnipresent ATB's "9PM (Til I Come)".
