Beats aficionado and all-round scenester, James Lavelle, has always had a way with a beat. Here, we get to see what the Mo Wax head honcho can turn up with a set of turntables and a wide choice of tunes for Global Underground 23 in Barcelona. On CD 1 he begins, appropriately enough, with DJ Shadow's brooding "Mongrel Meets It's Maker" before heading steadily towards nu skool breaks territory via cuts like Leftield's "Dusted" (featuring Roots Manuva), Thomas Bangalter's "Night Beats", building an infectious set that features Layo and Bushwacka's "Let The Good Times Roll", Sasha's "Fundamental", Evil9's "Crooked" and the excellent Unkle remix of Ian Brown's 'Fear'. CD 2 initially starts with a loose, four-four sound courtesy of Pitch Black's "Underground Sound" but soon brings back the pin-sharp syncopation with artists like Meat Katie, Rennie Pilgrem and Soul Of Man. Lavelle finally gets his tech house tendencies out halfway through this second mix, stringing together bubbling tracks from Peace Division, Duncan Gray, Lee Burridge, FC Kahuna and Halo before coming to a simmer with "There Goes The Fear" by Doves. Competent enough, but hardly the cutting edge stuff you might expect from a man perpetually hyped as a luminary. -Paul Sullivan.

He's big down under, Dave Seaman, so it's only right he should deliver a mix for Global Underground that reflects his love affair with Aussie club culture. Maybe they like the man for his lack of pretension, his adventurous spirit, or just his far-ranging scope of styles; a repertoire that takes in everything from ethnic breakbeats to eerie, fractured house. Whatever, CD1 highlights this subtle eclecticism, blending weird tribal dub and beardy electronica into a steep incline of pounding technoid shapes. CD2 hits the right note between the downbeat and the esoteric, weaving earnest but rich progressive house into the equation, each track stripped back to bare threads of melody and hypnotic military rhythm. The Best Air Guitar Album in the World. Ever! should not be mistaken for a "greatest rock album ever" kind of affair as it would cause monumental arguments as to why it includes Robbie Williams but not Led Zeppelin. The songs chosen by Queen guitarist Brian May are all there because they make the fingers start flexing, the head to start banging, and force you to assume the imaginary position of a pouting rock guitarist on stage in front of thousands of screaming worshipers. The first disc kicks of with Queen's heavy blues-rock anthem "Tie Your Mother Down" and ends with one of the most epic guitar solos ever recorded, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" which sadly appears as an abridged version. Highlights along the way are the brooding intro to Bowie's "Rebel Rebel", the Surfaris "Wipeout" and seminal guitar moment from beardy rock god Eric Clapton on "Layla". Disc two has a few more inclusions from recent years with Robbie Williams' storming "Let Me Entertain You", Weezer's "Hash Pipe" and Wheatus's "Teenage Dirtbag" alongside such classics as Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" and Motorhead's "Ace of Spades". So in summary there's no "Stairway" but plenty of guitar hooks, stabs and widdles to keep you prancing like Kiss while sounding like Beavis and Butthead. -Georgina Collins.

Relaxing après-club seems to be in vogue for 2001 as The Chillout Session Vol. 2 is just one in a spate of down-tempo house compilations for those quieter moments. Not that this is a bad thing when so much of the intricacies in the production of dance music are lost under the thud of a bass drum down the local night club. The first disc has many a beautiful song with the lion's share of soulful grooves in comparison to the mechanical hooks of the second disc. It starts with the radio friendly "Here With Me" by Dido which is the perfect opener, setting the tone and leaving all pretensions aside for the rest of the eclectic mix. A bold choice is the Afterlife mix of Jakatta's "American Dream" which also featured on the hugely successful Volume 1 in its original state but is more than welcome as it segues to the blissful Zero 7 ("Give it Away"). Things liven up a bit with the funked up breaks of Rae & Christian featuring vocalist Veba on "Spellbound" which blends into the twisty Pepe Deluxe ("Before You Leave"). Disc 2 is a selection of alternate mixes of dance floor fillers and old classics alike with veteran names such as Underworld ("Jumbo") and Faithless ("Drifting Away") slotted amidst Schiller's "Das Glockenspiel" and Santos' "Hear My Soul". If The Chillout Sessions Vol. 1 was an experiment (which worked well), then Volume 2 has developed the perfect formula. [+]

With 11 superbly arranged cuts from the likes of William Orbit, Rabbit in the Moon, and the Future Sound of London, not one moment is wasted. The disc's flavor is decidedly organic and wholly evocative of all-night mountain raves or desert parties. Starting with the early-morning stretch of Keiichi Suzuki's delightfully sunny "Satellite Serenade," the duo swiftly build the tempo up to the breezy ambient plateau of Morgan King's "Free" before heading into harder house territories. The metronomic pulse and atmospheric chanteuse vocals of Fuzzy Logic's "Obsession" form an incremental crescendo with Orbit's "Water from a Vine Leaf. " Being a condensed version of the European release, the closing salvo from Banco de Gaia's "Last Train to Lhasa" confirms the since-validated fact that these Exposure journeys have infinite potential; Sasha and Digweed are among the first DJs to create mix sets that tap into earthy, human emotions.
