Review Mahler - Symphony No 2 / London Symphony Orchestra:

In writing his Second Symphony, Gustav Mahler demonstrated the phenomenal confidence that comes only to those fully aware of their genius. Following in the gargantuan footsteps of Bruckner and Wagner, he crafted a vast musical landscape in five movements, to last over 80 minutes and scored for a massive orchestra, an even larger choir, and an off-stage brass band. The result is a journey through every possible human condition, from darkest despair to the triumphant glory of "Resurrection", climaxing in what must surely be the most transcendently uplifting finale in all nineteenth century music, and pointing towards Havergal Brian's even more colossal Symphony No. 1, Gothic". This album is as extraordinary as the symphony itself. Gilbert Kaplan is an 'amateur' conductor who has committed himself only to performing this work, becoming an expert on every aspect of the music, and receiving rapturous reviews from music critics around the globe. Assembling an extended London Symphony Orchestra of 125 players, five choirs totalling 200 voices and soloists Benita Valente and Maureen Forrester, this superbly detailed, and in places monumentally loud recording, will test the absolute limits of any hi-fi. Kaplan delves into the very soul of the symphony, painting darkness, ecstasy and every shade between with utmost clarity and power, leaving the listener overwhelmed yet wondrously elated. The album comes with two 68-page booklets, one featuring Mahler's letters concerning the symphony, the other detailed notes about various aspects of the work and the recording. The latter, especially, is lavishly illustrated. [+]

Review Once in a Red Moon / Secret Garden:

Secret Garden's latest, Once in a Red Moon, continues along the path of their previous releases such as Songs from a Secret Garden and Dawn of a New Century. Violinist Fionnuala Sherry and pianist/composer Rolf Lovland continue to combine in romantic and soulful ways around melodies that hover between the Romantic composers of the 19th century and the beautiful folk melodies and harmonies of many countries. Sherry's playing is full of passion whatever the setting, giving real red-blooded feeling to whatever musical landscape Lovland's pieces sketch out. Central to the expanded acoustic palette on this new album is the arranging skill of Kjetil Bjerkestrand, who combines absolute transparency of sound with compelling richness of texture. Guest singers Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson illuminate lyrics to different tunes, including a re-setting of the "Danny Boy" melody that becomes a tribute to Lovland's recently deceased mother. Celtic roots are never far away throughout this thoughtful and exquisite album, giving its overall yearning quality a particular and apposite focus. -Keith Shadwick.

Review Bach: Violin Concertos, BWV1041-1043 & 1060 / Philips:

Arthur Grumiaux's style may be recognisably "old school" in its. warmth, the way he uses vibrato and his luscious, full-throated tone,. but thankfully great music-making is not at the mercy of fashion. And. great music-making this certainly is. In faster movements Grumiaux. strides energetically through Bach's sinuous solo lines, in inner. movements he tends them lovingly, never losing the opportunity to point. out to the listener something he or she may have previously missed, but. never lingering long enough to lose the plot. [+]
In the Double Violin. Concerto Herman Krebbers proves an ideal partner, the tone of the two. violins sufficiently differentiated but their interpretation perfectly. matched. In the Oboe and Violin Concerto there's a switch of orchestra. and conductor, with a discernibly larger-scaled result but with no lack. of momentum (the sublime duetting in the slow movement is exactly. that-sublime). It would be difficult to find warmer or more desirable performances than these. -Harriet Smith.

Review The Very Best of Relaxing Classics / Various Artists:

Shelves may be groaning under the weight of the dozens of chillout/smooth/calm classical compilations available but they are going to have to make room for another, The Very Best of Relaxing Classics. A quick glance at the tracklisting reveals the usual suspects-Pachelbel's Canon in D, Barber's Adagio for Strings and the slow movement of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. But it's not all predictable. Liszt's Consolation No. 3, a poignant piano miniature, is most welcome as is Elgar's Sospiri for strings, harp and organ. Many of the pieces have become well known by being used in films and television programmes as well as for adverts: witness the Intermezzo from Mascagni's opera Cavalleria rusticana (Raging Bull and Kleenex), "Morning" from Peer Gynt by Grieg (Nescafé), John Tavener's haunting choral piece The Lamb (Orange) and the glorious Adagio (although, sadly, only an extract) from Schubert's String Quint! et in C (Inspector Morse). Slightly puzzling is the inclusion of two versions of Puccini's much-loved "O mio babbino caro" from his opera Gianni Schicchi-an instrumental version provides the first track and the compilation concludes with the original (featuring the divine Renée Fleming). -Rebecca Agnew.
