Review Chopin - Piano Concertos Nos 1 & 2 / EMI Classics:

With the exception of these two early piano concertos, most of Frederic Chopin's output was devoted to miniatures. Through these concertos, however, Chopin transformed the piano into an ideal vehicle for romanticism and established his own reputation as the premiere soloist of his day. Written in the artistically sheltered world of Warsaw, No. 1 was premiered by Chopin when he was 20 and reflects his intense wish for Polish independence. The centrality of the piano is revealed in the opening, Brahmsian "Maestoso", and continues with the idyllic, moonlit reverie of "Romanze". In the concluding rondo, the composer offers authentic excerpts of Cracow folk music. Concerto No. 2 (actually written before No. 1, but published later) once again places the piano in a prominent role, though the conventional sonata form is discarded for a theme-and-variations approach in the opening movement. Charles Dutoit keeps the reconstituted forces of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (now consisting of strings, four horns, two trumpets, winds in pairs, timpani, and trombone) in a state of constant alert, thereby allowing Argerich to create a spontaneous, acrobatic performance that spins with the abandon of fireworks. Review Russell Watson - Reprise / Russell Watson:

On Reprise, his third album, Russell Watson continues to bring together classical pieces with light songs-have Bizet and "Bohemian Rhapsody" ever shared a disc before? Probably not, and with good reason-it's rather unsettling to hear Leoncavallo's devestating "Vesti la giubba" (from Pagliacci) tagged on after a dreary rendition of the aforementioned Queen hit. He may have been dubbed "the people's tenor", but Watson is at his best-and most comfortable-at the lighter end of the repertory. He sings the lilting "That's Amore" with charm and humour, a smooth performance which compares to Robbie Williams on Swing When You're Winning. Nicholas Dodd's swooning orchestrations give Reprise a grandiose feel. Sadly, Watson's voice cannot match their intensity; his version of the famous duet from The Pearl Fishers (yes, he sings both parts) sounds strangled and his performance of "Core 'ngrato" is distinctly unmemorable. Watson is credited as Reprise's producer. If he maintains that role on album number four, he should concentrate on the light songs and ballads, which he performs so well, in this instance not just "That's Amore" but also "The Living Years", "I don't know how I got by" and "The best that love can be". -Rebecca Agnew.

Review The Holiday / Various:

For this Nancy Meyers-directed romantic comedy, Hans Zimmer serves up a breezy score quite different from the more heavy-duty works he's become known for. This may have something to do with the film's tone, of course, but also with the fact that Zimmer has sole credit on only two cues, having co-written the others with members of his extensive stable of helpers, including guitarist Heitor Pereira and even pop artist Imogen Heap (who also contributes wordless vocals in addition to getting writing credits on three tracks). In the film, Jack Black's character is a composer who namedrops Ennio Morricone; Zimmer steps up to the challenge with the opening track, "Maestro" (one of his solo compositions), which evidently seeks to emulate the romantic sweep of some of Morricone's scores and nearly succeeds. (This may sound like a criticism but getting near Morricone level is nothing to sneeze at. ) A little later "Verso e Prosa," a collaboration between Pereira and Herb Alpert -who contributes his immediately identifiable trumpet-also stands out. If the rest of the CD had shown as much spirited zest as these two tracks, the album could have become a prized addition to any soundtrack lover's library; alas, the other cues are too devoid of personality to make a lasting impression. -Elisabeth Vincentelli.
