Review True Love Waits - The Music of Radiohead / Radiohead:As befits the dedicated expectancy of its title, True Love Waits is a belated expression of admiration for the music of Radiohead from the renowned American concert pianist Christopher O'Riley, a man who ordinarily plys his craft performing Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Prokofiev but whose affinity for the anomalous Oxford quintet has inspired him to transpose 15 of their songs into his own interpretive, classical piano recitals. While it's true to say that classical is classical and pop is pop and ne'er the twain shall meet, Christopher O'Riley's True Love Waits sits alongside the Balanescu String Quartet's transcriptions of Kraftwerk compositions and Swedish choristers the Nau Ensemble's variations on Joy Division's Closer as a brilliantly effulgent exception to the rule. Amusingly serious sleevenotes aside (classical music etiquette deems Radiohead songs are actually written by Thomas Yorke, Jonathan Greenwood, Edward O'Brien, etc), O'Riley finds sedative melodic beauty hidden behind the rodent-bashing fancy of "Knives Out" while "Exit Music" and "Airbag" are chillingly distant, seemingly conveyed by invisible fingers from the haunted ballroom at the end of the marble corridor. "Arrest this man… he's like a detuned radio" sang Thom Yorke in 1997. However, thanks to Christopher O'Riley, the hitherto unthinkable concept of Middle-Englanders chinking their afternoon cups and saucers to the strains of "Karma Police" on Classic FM has just become a reality. -Kevin Maidment.

Review Classical Graffiti / Planets:The title of the Planets' debut album, Classical Graffiti, aptly encapsulates the latest project by Mike Batt, whose career has long steered a path between camp and classical, from serious orchestral concerts to pop hits, from film scores to masterminding the Wombles. Recently Batt gave the world Bond, and the Planets are even more of the same-four classically trained young women, this time partnered by four classically trained young men. The result is 16 Batt-arranged and produced tracks, both originals and covers of famous classical melodies, some acoustic, most given a polished MOR rock-dance twist. The Planets made their public debut supporting Deep Purple's 2002 UK tour and there's more than a hint of 1970s prog-rock, which, combined with an energetic feel, should go down a storm with an enthusiastic audience. Opening with an up-tempo, beat-laden "Adagio" from Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez, the set includes "Contradanza", a Vivaldi-influenced Batt dance originally penned for Vanessa Mae, and a beautiful, slightly adapted version of the traditional "She Moved Through the Fair". Built on the lineage of Hooked on Classics and Sky this is a prefabricated cross-over project perfectly pitched for a world of manufactured bands and shows such as Pop Idol. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Elgar: Enigma Variations / Universal Classics:The Vienna Philharmonic under John Eliot Gardiner brings a sense of freshness of discovery to Elgar's noble music. This is partially because this is hardly regular repertoire for the orchestra, and also as Gardiner approaches the scores with a clear individuality of interpretation. Bringing these four works together makes for a satisfying 70 minutes of listening. In the South brings with it moments of almost unbearable delicacy and tenderness which nevertheless do not sound sentimental. A refreshing ardour and dark dramaticism also mark out this reading. Gardiner captures the individual sound worlds of the Introduction and Allegro and Sospiri to perfection. The tender nostalgia of the former and the warmth of the latter lead to an account of the Enigma Variations distinguished by real attention to detail (emphasised by DG's clear and well-balanced recording). Gardiner refuses to milk the music for all it is worth as some interpreters do, preferring to let it speak smoothly and naturally: because of that the performance emerges as all the more emotionally charged. The Vienna players seem to revel in Elgar's frequently beautiful scoring. This Enigma Variations is worthy to sit alongside the finest in the catalogue.
