Review Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring / Orchestra of the Kirov Opera:Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy are, in many ways, the perfect coupling. Both works are, in their way, extreme, and both works suit Gergiev's unparalleled ability for penetrating to the heart of a score. He paints the Rite of Spring in vivid, almost garish colours, at all times reading the score afresh. Philips' superb recording successfully conveys both the visceral impact of "Spring Rounds" and the sheer raw energy of "Augurs of Spring". There is a sense of inevitability about the "Ritual Dance of the Ancestors"; the Sacrificial Dance, which follows, has its tension heightened because of (rather than despite) Gergiev's slightly deliberate tread. Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy is late romanticism writ large. Above and beyond the perfumed sonorities, Gergiev identifies and projects an underlying disquiet, from the dark trumpet figures through to the shattering climax. At times the Kirov Orchestra is positively luminous. It is Gergiev's long-range grasp of the piece that is most impressive: the resultant cumulative effect is close to overpowering. -Colin Clarke.

Review Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols / EMI Classics:Few sounds are more evocative of a traditional Christmas than the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. Here the group is heard in the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, recorded for the first time complete with both carols and lessons included. The repertoire isn't just traditional: there are a number of contributions by contemporary composers Thomas Adès, Judith Weir and John Tavener, all of which are probing, sincere, even personal examples of their art (and some are daringly liberated, harmonically speaking). As a record of this much-loved annual event, the album is entirely to be cherished, although the downside for some listeners-at least on repeated hearings-is that the entire service is heard with congregational singing included. -David Patrick Stearns.

Review Shaken and Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond Project / James Bond Films (Related Recordings):Enlisting an array of indie icons, from Iggy Pop to Chrissie Hynde (whose version of "Live And Let Die" is a definite highlight), Arnold attempts to update-if not exactly subvert-some of the more notable Bond theme tunes. Yet despite this noble attempt at deconstruction, what's remarkable here is how so many of the acts conform to expectations: Pulp, typically, make "All Time High" seem a furtive, even faintly grubby experience; while Aimee Mann performs "Nobody Does It Better" with a kind of weary sarcasm, either unable or unwilling to swallow the myth of male potency. On the other hand, Shara Nelson's reading of "Moonraker", and Martin Fry's "Thunderball," each manage to communicate at least a little of the magic of the original versions. And having at last found a piece worthy of him, David McAlmont loses no opportunity to make "Diamonds Are Forever" his own. -Andrew McGuire.

Review A Feather on the Breath of God / Doreen Muskett:This is the record that started the Hildegard craze back in 1982-and you need only listen to Emma Kirkby glide and soar through Columba aspexit (the opening hymn) to understand why. Gothic Voices performs the music very simply, either alternating soloists and unison choir over a drone or using a single unaccompanied voice. The singers render Hildegard's extravagant poetic imagery and melody not with the rhythmically fluid, ecstatic approach favoured by Sequentia, but with equalist rhythm and a calm, meditative quality. Gothic Voices' straightforward approach is less likely to send you into a rapturous trance than is Sequentia's, but in the hands of such fine singers as Kirkby, Margaret Philpot, and Emily van Evera, Hildegard's extraordinary texts and melodies are captivating-and clear enough to linger in the memory as melodies rather than just sensations. Review Bram Stoker's Dracula Original Soundtrack / Columbia:Francis Ford Coppola took an inspired gamble in hiring the Polish composer to realise his Gothic stage production made for the cinema screen. Nothing about Kilar conforms to Hollywood. His classical works and earlier European films for the likes of Polanski and Zanussi, show a style based upon a repetitive form that insinuates itself upon the ear until it becomes unforgettable. "Vampire Hunters" is a superb example, being a cyclic string and brass motif that develops an exciting dynamic by revolving between keys. A pounding drum keeps time and rhythm for a flawlessly edited scene of destroying the vampire's lair. There is also the exquisite theme for Mina and Dracula, which in "Love Remembered" is presented on the composer's favoured instrument, flute. Again, it's through instrumental interchange across repetitions of the theme that the piece achieves its effect. A little sound design ("The Ring Of Fire") offers pause before the tender choral dénouement. Despite the tail-end pop song, this was a blockbuster debut without precedent. -Paul Tonks.
