Review Piazzolla: Soul of the Tango / Classical:Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Ma even participates in a posthumous collaboration with one 1987 Piazzolla recording. Furthermore, while he's obviously the headliner here, he doesn't dominate the arrangements nearly as much as he does the billing and photography of the disc. While the result isn't your essential Piazzolla album (that would have to include more of the composer's own playing), it's an atmospheric and convincing collection, perhaps a good introduction for those who don't know the music. -Leslie Gerber Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Review Mozart: Horn Concertos / Great Recordings of the Century:It's tempting to say "this is a justly legendary disc, made when the gods seemed to be smiling upon all concerned. Go and buy it". However, that would be shirking the more analytical aspects of a reviewer's duties. So why should you buy it? Mozart's horn concertos are the first great essays in the medium, and even within the four you can trace a clear development in terms of sophistication and technical difficulty. And who better to present these works than one of the undisputed greats of the instrument, Dennis Brain, whose career was so tragically cut short in a car crash when he was just 36? The coupling is the fine Quintet for piano and wind with Dennis joined by his oboist-brother, Leonard. Although these recordings were made in 1954, they have been excellently cleaned up by EMI for this release which plays heavily on their nostalgia value, with a reproduction of the original LP sleeve and black disc on the cover of the CD. The concertos became a bestseller when they were first released and in the intervening years they've lost none of their lustre. -Harriet Smith.

Review Maria Callas - The Voice of the Century / EMI 100:Twenty years after Maria Callas' death in 1977, EMI honoured one of its most faithful recording stars by re-releasing her entire output. Voice of the Century figureheads the anniversary edition, and if ever there was a highlights album to be bought, this must be it. The first disc concentrates on Italian opera, and already on the opening track Callas' direct, unaffected Norma demonstrates why she was the best-loved soprano of her generation. Her ability to let the character choices transform her voice led misguided critics to object to "thin(ness) in the high register", "vulnerable tone", "unstable vibrato" and so on. But Callas' unparalleled ability to renew and personalise well-known arias such and the depth and truthfulness of her coloratura register, placed her beyond criticism. Admittedly Callas at times forcibly subdued co-singers and conductors, but this was certainly not the case when she communed with the La Scala orchestra and Tullio Serafin, with whom the Greek "maestra" shared a love and affinity for the leisurely paced Italian bel canto tradition. Callas' takes on the French repertoire (disc two) leaves her more open to stylistic scrutiny-the 1961 Gluck recordings "Che faro" and "Alceste" fall victims to heavy handed romanticism. Callas and conductor Georges Pretre do more justice to the Gounoud and Saint-Saëns, and as Carmen Callas adds a whole new octave to her sizzling lower register. The set as a whole is a real treat, and positively addictive! -Yngvil V. G.
