Review The Christmas Album / Cambridge Clare College Choir:Initially released in 1979, this album built on the success of the legendary Carols for Choirs volumes in establishing John Rutter's name with the wider public-and gave a strong hint that he was more than just a talented composer/arranger. As the many subsequent releases on the Collegium label have also shown, Rutter is a deeply sensitive and musical conductor, alive to the colour of words, always allowing phrases to breathe naturally. The accomplished Clare College Choir features both male and female voices, the latter providing a more rounded alternative to those world-famous neighbours in Cambridge. Included are many of Rutter's own easy-listening carol arrangements ("King Jesus hath a Garden" and "Wexford Carol", for example) plus others by the likes of Vaughan Williams and David Willcocks, while "Donkey Carol" and "Mary's Lullaby" are quintessential Rutter originals. Only a few numbers can be classed (statistically) as all-time Christmas faves-the likes of "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Ding Dong Merrily on High", for example-but this needn't deter anyone from snapping up what is the perfect album to accompany Christmas pud mixing (preferably by candlelight, imagining the twilight scene in Ely Cathedral's Lady Chapel, whose glorious acoustic graces the sound). -Andrew Green.

Review Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Sondheim) (Highlights) / Original Soundtrack:It was surely only a matter of time until Tim Burton turned his dark attentions to the 19th century tale of Sweeney Todd, the cutthroat barber whose tales of murder and most grisly commerce on the streets of London became the stuff of an award winning 1979 musical. Here, a cast including longtime Burton collaborators Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter-plus Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and Sasha Baron-Cohen-breathe new life into Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's musical tale with a special gothic relish for the simmering horror within. Depp's accomplished, haunted "No Place Like London" sets the scene for what's to come, the nation's capital introduced as a moral abyss ("There's a hole in the world like a great black pit/And the vermin of the world inhabit it"), while Bonham-Carter brings Cockney energy and a squirt of sauce to the "The Worst Pies in London". A neat comic turn, meanwhile, comes courtesy of Baron-Cohen, who plays the role of Italian barber Adolfo Pierelli-inventor of a fraudulent anti-balding lotion-with humorous gusto ("The Contest"). -Louis Pattison.

This two-disc collection proves that with generous selections from a 20-year period. This includes a track from his replaced score to Practical Magic, the beautiful song "If" from a Japanese animated version of The Diary of Anne Frank, and some powerful brass intonations in his stringless score for The Ogre.
