Review Ally McBeal : A Very Ally Christmas / Ally McBeal:Ally McBeal has dominated television for three years, so why not a Christmas album for the fans, who number 20 million or more? Truth be told, this is really a Vonda Shepard record (she is Ally's TV singing voice), with a little help from the McBeal cast, including Ally (Calista Flockhart) who successfully tries on Eartha Kitt's silly, sassy and seductive "Santa Baby". With 14 tracks and Macy Gray's distinctive "Winter Wonderland" included, the album covers lots of turf as Shephard and company cover hymns and carols that are sparsely arranged and appealing for their soulful simplicity. Shephard's soprano talent continues to reveal its many riches: here is a singer who is at home in a gut-bucket blues tune such as "Please Come Home for Christmas", or joyfully Broadway swinging on "The Man with the Bag". Additional surprises include Robert Downey Jr's duet with the versatile songbird on "White Christmas" and Joni Mitchell's "River". Recommended. -Martin Keller.

Review Nutcracker & Christmas Eve / Naxos:The actress Prunella Scales is the narrator on this Naxos release which is unashamedly aimed at the children's Christmas market. Two seasonal works fill 64 minutes-Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve Suite. Scales is rather a plummy mother. Her elegant diction comes from a bygone dinner-party era. She sounds kind and warm but also somewhat distant as if she were the sort to employ a third party actually to bring the children up. One imagines her obedient junior audience demurely sitting in rows, not making a sound, restraining themselves even as the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" twinkles magically from the speakers. Children may find this lap-forbidding. Nikolai Gogol wrote the story for Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Christmas Eve. A blacksmith fools the devil, obtains a pair of the Empress' slippers and wins the initially reluctant hand of the prettiest girl in town. Rimsky-Korsakov's music is more incidental to, and dependant on, the story than Tchaikovsky's, which may be performed without. [+]Michael Halasz conducts the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in the Tchaikovsky, Igor Golovschin the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in the Rimsky-Korsakov. All very charming in a children-should-be-seen-and-not-heard sort of way. -Rick Jones.

Review Praetorius: Mass (Lutheran Mass for Christmas Morning) /Gabrieli Consort & Players · McCreesh / Samuel Scheidt:This exhilarating disc is arguably the most important record Paul McCreesh has made. Praetorius, the first great composer of Lutheran church music, wrote countless pieces based on popular Lutheran chorale tunes, ranging from simple harmonizations to flamboyant fantasias for multiple choirs with instruments. He also provided detailed instructions regarding various performance options-including ways to involve the congregation. Here, for the first time, McCreesh puts these instructions into practice, reconstructing an extravagant Christmas service. We hear elaborately scored Mass movements, simple harmonizations, the Creed (with Luther's own music), lusty congregational singing, and spirited organ improvisations. Many of the Christmas chorales Praetorius used are still well-known today, including Wachet auf (Sleepers wake) and In dulci jubilo, which gets a magnificent setting with trumpet-and-drum fanfares. -Matthew Westphal.

Review Christmas Hits: 50 Festive Favourites / Various Artists:The first disc of Christmas Hits is dominated by songs from the 70s and early 80s-the golden era of the mobile DJ and Christmas number ones, when people sang about "Father Christmas" or "snow" and couples tenderly proclaimed their love by calling each other "scumbag" or "maggot". And there are plenty of pop songs here that although not ostensibly about Christmas, are certainly in the spirit of things. Just listen to "The Power of Love" (Frankie Goes To Hollywood's poignant last single) or E17's "Stay Another Day" and try not to weep openly through Robson & Gerome's "I Believe", no really, try. Disc two is more laid back, with classics from Bing Crosby, Elvis and Tony Bennett mingled with some soulful covers of traditional songs like "Silent Night" and modern classics such as "Last Christmas" and "Walking in the Air". Unfortunately, both of the latter are tortured by Human Nature and Declan Galbraith respectively, and its here that the compilation starts to fall apart. Some of the covers are interesting, but often they highlight just how much better the originals were. There have been plenty of great versions of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", not to mention the original so why do we get Michael Bolton? The inclusion of Eva Cassidy's "Over the Rainbow" is also a little confusing. It's poignant sure, but since when has it been associated with Christmas? Still, there's plenty here to keep you amused until its time to put the baubles and tinsel back in the loft. -Jenny Winwood.
