Review A Very Special Christmas, Vol. 4: Live / Various:

The Very Special Christmas series has become almost as much of a Christmas tradition as decking the halls and trimming the tree. Although lacking the charm and breadth of previous in-studio discs, Special Christmas Live partially makes up the deficit with interesting pairings. There's Mary J Blige and Sheryl Crow "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Eric Clapton and Crow doing "Merry Christmas Baby," Clapton and John Popper trading licks in "Christmas Blues," and old Slowhand and Tracy Chapman reprising Chapman's delicious "Give Me One Reason," a tune that has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. Obviously Clapton-heavy (there's even a solo slot with the blues ballad "Christmas Tears"), the set also includes Jon Bon Jovi getting on his knees to plead "Please Come Home for Christmas" and "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home"), Vanessa Williams singing "What Child Is This," and Chapman doing a soulful acoustic take of "O Holy Night. " The all-star line-up closes en masse with "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. " -Martin Keller.

Review Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics [EXPLICIT LYRICS] / Various Artists:

Third time's the charm! Chef Aid was padded with "inspired by" songs, and the Bigger, Longer, & Uncut soundtrack by gratuitous remixes. Here at last is an album containing nothing but the series characters warbling away. From the show itself is "Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo" (embellished with some randomly inserted lyrics), "The Lonely Jew On Christmas" (with a special guest impersonation), and "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel" (with the whole Broflofski family suffering Cartman' s anti-semitism). Guaranteed instant new favourites are "Merry F***ing Christmas" (from Mr. Garrison in fine voice), "I Saw Three Ships" (Shelley Marsh getting ribbed for her teeth braces), and "The Most Offensive Song Ever" (Kenny and Mr. Hankey thinking the virgin birth through). In addition there' s contributions from Satan, Hitler, Chef, and Mr. Mackey-all made that bit more special by Marc Shaiman' s arrangements. The real success of this disc (as always) are the songs from Cartman. [+]
"O Holy Night" reaffirms what makes the holiday for kids-presents! And "Swiss Colony Beef Log" is possibly the best song the show has ever produced. It' s a mod-rock parody with the "big-boned" boy bewailing the absence of his favourite Xmas snack. In a word: sweeeeeeet. -Paul Tonks.

Review Bach: Christmas Oratorio / Erato:

Like that of the Easter and Ascension oratorios, the music of the Christmas Oratorio was compiled mainly from Bach's secular cantatas. That said, individual texts and scores were also considerably reworked for the composer to come up with a densely argued and pristinely shaped structure which assumes the form of a six-part arch, taking the Nativity story from Birth, via Annunciation, Adoration, Circumcision and Naming to the Coming of the Magi and their eventual climactic Adoration. Reciprocally well argued and formed is Tom Koopman's fastidious reading with his own well-drilled Baroque Orchestra and Choir. From a festive and rustic opening onwards-trumpets and timpani bristling with energy and attack-Koopman rightly treats the oratorio as a journey of discovery. And what lavish treats lie in store along the way, not in the least the immaculate contributions of all four vocal soloists, especially the velvety alto of Elisabeth von Magnus and the rich bass of Klaus Mertens. Propulsive tempi assist in keeping both the drama and the momentum going, and there's some sharp split-second editing to ensure that recitatives, arias and choruses really flow. Add the pristine playing of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, plus fine recording balance between them, soloists and choir for a thrilling and first-rate rendition. -Duncan Hadfield.

Review Now - the Christmas Album / Various Artists:

Tis the season to be jolly, and what better to kick of the proceedings than Slade and Wizzard with those perennial seasonal favourites "Merry Xmas Everybody" and "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday". The Now Christmas collection stands head and shoulders above the field of festive compilations as it actually has a lot of unusual tracks-the titles may be familiar, but the artists doing them are all quite unexpected. Hence you get Kylie purring her way through "Santa Baby", the Spice Girls indulging in some "Christmas Wrapping" before taking you on a "Sleigh Ride", Samantha Mumba telling us "All I Want For Christmas", Billie Piper casting her eye back to "Last Christmas" and Ronan Keating teaming up with Maire Brennan for a "Fairytale Of New York". These tracks work to varying degrees, but there are plenty more traditional originals on offer to sate the most hearty of holiday appetites-from Bing Crosby crooning his way through "White Christmas" to Aled Jones taking his Snowman by the hand while they go "Walking In The Air". No Christmas compilation should be without Cliff Richard, and sure enough he puts in an appearance with "Mistletoe And Wine" and "The Millennium Prayer". A worthy addition to the Now stables, and a thoroughbred through and through. -Helen Marquis.

Review More Twisted Christmas / Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio:

Rivers is in top form here plying his satire-ridden stocking-stuffer trade, serving up note-per-note knockoffs of everyone from Led Zeppelin and the B-52's to Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, and Tchaikovsky, among others. No lazy satirist, Rivers and company deliver not only grand musical copies, but clever and witty lyrics that slum on the guttural side only occasionally ("Buttcracker Suite" being the biggest offender). The rest of the time it's good-natured stuff even ol' Scrooge could like. "It's the Most Fattening Time of the Year" sings Rivers's Johnny Mathis, "Sled Zepplin" nails the Plant-Page matrix, and the Beatles are the aim on "Jesus' Birthday" and "All You Need Is Elves. " But the most inspired cuts go to a big-band swing version the Stones' "Get Off of My Cloud" (here retitled "Hey You! Get Off My House") and Hendrix's "Purple Haze," knowingly recast as "Holidaze (S'Cuze Me, I've Got Gifts to Buy). " -Martin Keller.

Review Schütz: Christmas Vespers /Gabrieli Consort & Players · McCreesh / Archiv Produktion:

Heinrich Schütz's Christmas Story, besides being a historical milestone, has always been one of 17th-century music's crowd-pleasers-the former because it's the ancestor of Christmas oratorios by Bach, Charpentier and even Berlioz; the latter because it presents engaging depictions of the characters in the Nativity story with a cornucopia of colourful instruments (piping recorders for the shepherds, a galumphing bassoon-representing the gait of the camels?-for the three wise men, regally blaring cornets for King Herod, and pompous trombones for his priests). As you might expect, there are a number of fine recordings of this proto-oratorio, from the graceful and somewhat delicate rendition of René Jacobs to the high-energy performance of Robert King (on Hyperion). As usual, Paul McCreesh goes where no one has gone before, showing us the context for which Schütz probably wrote the work in the first place: a Christmas Day Vespers service at the court in Dresden where the composer was chapel master. McCreesh's reconstruction includes thrilling performances of two Christmas hymns (with tunes by Luther himself), organ music by Scheidt, a psalm from Schütz's collection Psalmen Davids, a delicate motet for four soloists, and (in an electrifying reading) a lavish multiple-choir Magnificat. Alongside all these, McCreesh's rendition of the Christmas Story seems-well, not lacklustre, exactly (it's very skillfully done, and Susan Hemington Jones as the Angel is a particular treat), but a bit less inspired than the rest of the programme. So if that one work is all you care about, you may want to consider the Jacobs or King versions; otherwise, this disc won't disappoint-it's as exciting a Christmas record as you'll find. -Matthew Westphal.
