Review The Three Tenors (1994) / Teldec:It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event-phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavour of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high and loud-and you don't take your opera too seriously-you'll love this disc. -David Vernier It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. Review Westlake - Miss Potter - OST / Dramatico:Echoing the intents of the successful James Barrie biopic Neverland, the tale of fellow Victorian children's author Beatrix Potter frames her life through a distinctly modern prism. In this telling, the creator of Peter Rabbit shrugs off provincial restraints to become something akin to a feminist environmentalist, a notion that's deftly underscored in this hybrid orchestral soundtrack by Australian Nigel Westlake and Oscar-winning vet Rachel Portman. The former's cues tend towards shimmering washes of strings and winds, weaving a wintry atmosphere that's more wondrous than treacly, while Portman's three contributions are cast in more shaded, autumnal arrangements that suggest the interior struggles of Potter herself. The coda to this delicate, compelling suite is Katie Melua's haunting ballad "When You Taught Me How to Dance," a slice of gentle melancholy that serves the score well. -Jerry McCulley.

Review Ultrasound: Music for the Unborn Child / Ultrasound:Many hospitals across the US now send new mums and babes home equipped with discs of classical music to soothe and gently stimulate babies' tender minds, Ultrasound does them one better, bringing together a delightfully well-rounded set specifically chosen for those still in the womb. Expectant mums will appreciate the effects of the mellow strains of Bach's Suite No. 3, the delicate playfulness of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and Mozart's proven-to-make-you-smart Sonata for Two Pianos featuring André Previn. Debussy's "Clair de lune" is especially lovely as conducted and fluted by James Galway, and Leontyne Price is a warm blanket of comfort giving voice to Schubert's "Ave Maria". Indeed, these songs are aural balm to both parent and child long after birth. -Paige La Grone.

Review Mozart / Beethoven: Clarinet Concertos / Michael Collins Russian National Orchestra Mikhail Pletnev:Two firsts here-the long-awaited recording of Mikhail Pletnev's transcription of Beethoven's violin concerto for clarinet and Michael Collins' only recording to date of Mozart's clarinet concerto. With his most recent discs concentrating on contemporary repertory, including Elliott Carter's clarinet concerto and John Adams' Gnarly Buttons, Collins' foray back to the music of the late 18th and early 19th centuries is a most welcome addition to the catalogue. Collins has held off recording the Mozart for the best part of two decades to avoid the inevitable Weber coupling, waiting rather for a more unorthodox combination of works-and you don't get more unconventional than the Beethoven. The demands of the lengthy opening movement are extreme and Collins handles them well. But it is in the second and third movements where the Beethoven gamble really pays off, Collins' melancholic playing in the former so moving as to warm even the coldest of hearts. The performance of the Mozart was worth the wait. Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra provide a rich and sensitive accompaniment; Collins matches this with effortless notes floating in the high register and beautiful reedy tones at the bottom of the range. A valuable new release. -Rebecca Agnew.
