Review Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No.3 etc / Sony Classics:This has to be one of the most eagerly awaited discs of 2000. Arcadi Volodos-the young Russian tiger with fingers of steel and a heart of pure poetry-has so far made two solo recordings, both of which have been deservedly acclaimed to the heavens. Now comes his first concerto recording: Rach 3, a bold choice pitting him against some of the greats of the past. So does it measure up? Well, yes and no. Straight off, he and Levine don't seem to have the most companionable of partnerships. The work doesn't soar and envelop, it doesn't have quite the declamatory ardour that the finest readings possess. Being a live performance that might seem odd, but then the CD lists several dates which would indicate a certain amount of knitting-together at the editing stage. Having said that, as a demonstration of superb piano playing per se, it's impressive. But how much finer is Volodos when he holds the stage alone in the solo works that fill out this disc. The range of colours he reveals in the transcription of the slow movement of the Cello Sonata is breathtaking-and alone virtually worth the price of the disc. [+]

Publisher: Decca Release date: 2000-09-11 Run time: 146 min. Creator: Jules Massenet RRP: £30.99 Price: £17.47
Review Massenet: Thaïs / Decca:There is much to recommend in this impressive recording of an unjustly neglected operatic gem. As the eponymous Alexandrian courtesan who converts to asceticism, Renée Fleming is gorgeous and produces a stream of rich, golden sounds that enchant and seduce. Thomas Hampson as the monk who converts her and-too late-realises that he loves her, is bold and authoritative. Yves Abel draws some supple and sinuous playing from his Bordeaux orchestra-the Prelude to Act 1 Scene 2, for example, which is a shimmering musical portrait of the port of Alexandria, is stunning. Unfortunately both Fleming and Hampson lack a certain vulnerability and sense of inner conflict, which makes their respective conversions a little hard to swallow and can sometimes make the recording feel a little unfocussed. But what the piece lacks in fin de siècle languor and anguish, it makes up for in a dramatically driven robustness in the big set pieces which is thrilling-and being able to hear the famous "Meditation" in context (with off-stage choral accompaniment) is a treat worth the price alone. -Warwick Thompson.

Review Vertigo: Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] / Varese Sarabande:Vertigo represents the summit of the seven-picture, nine-year association between Alfred Hitchcock and legendary composer Bernard Herrmann. Using instrumental and harmonic colour as the main paints in his repertoire, Herrmann deploys brief melodic cells and minimalist techniques to explore the obsessed world of Scotty Ferguson (James Stewart), a retired detective who has fallen in love with a woman from the past. In doing so, Herrmann broke from the post-romantic aesthetic personified by Golden Age masters such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Alfred Newman. Highlights include the hypnotic, dream-like "Prelude", the churning allegro con brio of "Rooftop", the haunting love music in "Madeleine's First Appearance", a memorable habanera ("Carlotta's Portrait"), and the cathartic "Scene d'Amour", which has been compared with Wagner's "Liebestod" from Tristan und Isolde. Page Cook, long-time critic for Films In Review, once wrote that Muir Mathieson's performance "remains one of the greatest pieces of film music conducting ever recorded. every tempo, every rhythmic nuance, every dynamic inhabits the film. " In other words, this is a classic film/music amalgamation that should be in every cinema lover's collection. -Kevin Mulhall.

Publisher: Lso Live Release date: 2002-08-05 Creator: Mstislav Rostropovich RRP: £5.99 Price: £4.88
Review Shostakovich: Symphony No.11 / Lso Live:The 13th recording on the excellent budget-price label LSO Live features as grim a work as the 20th century produced. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 was inspired by what history books call the Revolution of 1905, a tumultuous time in Russian history sparked by the shooting of hundreds of demonstrators by the Tsar's troops on January 9 of that year (the original Bloody Sunday). The massacre was followed by strikes, insurrections and mutinies including that on the Battleship Potemkin. Poignant folksongs that arose during the period appear in the symphony and would have meant much in 1957 to the first Russian audiences among which was young Mstislav Rostropovich, now conducting for the first time on this label. He fashions fragile suspense in the bleak first movement Palace Square, the bare fifths yawning like deserted alleys, the bugle calls pre-echoing Britten, the flutes idly whistling a revolutionary tune. The second, Ninth of January, follows like a whirlwind, delivering another folk melody, which is firstly a threatening whisper, latterly a baying horde. The third movement, In Memoriam, features the LSO's beautiful grey violas over a padding bass in a flowing mournful song about the fallen. The fourth, Alarm, is alert and poundingly rhythmic, beginning with a bracing staccato call to arms, then banging out the symphony's collected themes with the sort of incessant bombardment that makes war insufferable, and ending with an exciting tutti onslaught pierced by military side-drumming and an unstopped bell mixing major and minor overtones in final, ringing, tumultuous discords. One senses the conductor's enormous vitality on the podium-the orchestra was keen to capture Rostropovich live. [+]
Two performances in March 2002 contribute on the grounds that the likelihood of a cougher coughing twice in the same place is a million to one. Keen ears may detect the splicing. A thumpingly magnificent reminder of a calamitous year in history. -Rick Jones.

Review Beethoven - Piano Concertos Nos 1 - 5 / Teldec:Aimard is best-known as an exponent of contemporary music, Harnoncourt as a founding father of the period instrument movement. To the provocative Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos 1-5 both bring elements of their contrasting backgrounds-Aimard in the lucidity and transparency of his playing, Harnoncourt by rooting Beethoven within earlier traditions. But such templates don't always apply here, since they also utilise such ultra-Romantic gestures as wide tempo fluctuations (often from one measure to the next), elongated pauses and unexpected accents. Such a diversity of interpretive stances takes getting used to, but the effort's worthwhile as these discs make something fresh and new out of familiar repertory pieces. The first two concertos fare best and the "Emperor" is also striking with its blend of clear textures and heroic gestures that likely surprised the composer's contemporaries with their boldness. In No. 3, lyricism sometimes shades into lingering and the famous dialogue between growling orchestra and poetic piano in No. 4 is tame alongside most versions. The pair generally favour spacious tempos-the opening allegro con brios of the first three concertos don't have much brio and slow movements are slower than the norm, although those fluctuating internal speeds keep total timings within the "normal" range. But then, the goal of these artists is to restore a spirit of adventure and spontaneity to Beethoven and they've certainly succeeded. [+]

Review Tchaikovsky: 1812 Festival Overture, Op.49; Capriccio Italien / Beethoven: Wellington's Victory / University Of Minnesota Brass Band Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra Antal Doráti:This disc caused quite a stir when first issued in the early 1960s. With a panoply of infantry in the Beethoven, and bells and cannon in the Tchaikovsky, Dorati goes for maximum impact: just what both pieces need when heard outside the concert hall or arena. Wellington's Victory has often been labelled Beethoven's worst major work-pointlessly if you consider it was written as a quick commission for a new line of mechanical instrument! Take it with a fair pinch of salt and enjoy. 1812 is a better work than many people, including Tchaikovsky, would give it credit for. Again, it's not profound, nor was it meant to be. It sounds fabulous in this latest transfer-40 years just melt away as you listen. The Minneapolis SO is not in the "super league" of US orchestras, but they rise to the occasion as Dorati encourages them to do. You also get a hard and fast Capriccio Italen, and two discussions on how the sessions for the main works were set up. As the results amply demonstrate, it's a slice of recording history to treasure. -Richard Whitehouse.
