Review McCartney: Working Classical / EMI:Working Classical might just be the perfect outlet for the composing skills of Sir Paul McCartney. Here, the former Beatles (and, let's not forget, Wings) member scales things down from his previous classical-music endeavours-the overweight works Liverpool Oratorio and Standing Stone. In the hands of the Loma Mar Quartet chamber group and the London Symphony Orchestra, McCartney's shorter compositions sound all the more intimate (and effective). Album opener "Junk" is a simple waltz dating from the composer's days with the Fab Four, performed here by the Quartet with short-but-sweet results. "A Leaf" is another waltz motif, this one performed with a full orchestra. McCartney pop favourites "Warm and Beautiful", "Somedays", "She's My Baby", and "The Lovely Linda" all get chamber-music treatments that bring out their compositional beauty. And, while influences seem to range from Jan&áacute;cek to Morricone, there's no doubting that McCartney knows how to write a convincing ditty-pop or otherwise. -Jason Verlinde.

Review The Art of the Prima Donna / Covent Garden Francesco Molinari-Pradelli:In February 1959, an unknown (well, comparatively) Australian singer appeared at Covent Garden in Franco Zeffirelli's new production of Lucia di Lammermoor and took the world by storm. The following year Joan Sutherland went into the studio to record this reissued tribute to prima donnas of previous generations, illustrating along the way, the bel canto tradition of which she was to become a leading exponent. The 16 excerpts on this digitally remastered double CD include several roles she had already sung or was on the verge of singing, from Gilda in Rigoletto, which she had sung at Covent Garden before her Lucia debut, to Norma. What a performance! The voice is fresh, remarkable in its beauty and she makes it all sound so effortless, tossing off Handel's "Let the bright Seraphim" or the Jewel aria from Gounod's Faust as if they're the easiest things in the world. This sparkling selection of glorious singing demonstrates just why Sutherland was to remain at the top of her profession for the next 30 years and join those to whom she here pays tribute as one of the great singers of all time. -Richard Fawkes.

Review The British Music Collection: William Boyce - Symphonies / The Academy of Ancient Music Christopher Hogwood:William Boyce's collection of Eight Symphonies was published in 1760, though all save one were actually composed as overtures between 1739 and 1756. Until recently, Boyce's posthumous reputation rested on his church music and choral anthems such as Heart of Oak, but in his day he was also active in the London theatre world and these "Symphonys" are representative examples of the vogue for Italianate sinfonias (three movements: fast-slow-fast) and French overtures (a slow introduction-fugue-one or more dance movements). Like many other capable British composers, Boyce was ultimately overshadowed by the commanding presence of Handel, and it is thanks in no small part to the period-instrument movement that the considerable charms of his instrumental output are now better appreciated. Melodious, light of texture and enlivened with sprightly gavottes, minuets and jigs, these works need the sympathetic advocacy of groups such as Christopher Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music to bring them back to life. Like Trevor Pinnock before him, Hogwood grasps the music's innate gracefulness: both versions match tempos almost exactly throughout, but Hogwood's rhythmic precision allows more space to appreciate the instrumental textures, while his substitution of organ for harpsichord in places give the continuo more variety. Both recordings of this delightful music, however, are self-recommending. -Mark Walker.

Review Mysterium - Sacred Arias / Angela Gheorghiu London Philharmonic Orchestra Ion Marin:One of the mysteries of Angela Gheorghiu's Mysterium is why it has taken so long to come out-it was recorded in September 1998. But for Gheorghiu fans it will be worth the wait. The Romanian soprano's warmly rounded voice, with its phenomenal control in pianissimo passages, is shown to great advantage in the opening four Romanian songs, so redolent of the Orthodox church you can almost smell the incense and candle wax. It would be good to see more of this repertoire making its way onto disc. Beyond these Romanian songs the other 11 numbers are Gheorghiu's choice, a personal collection of sacred arias, and if Brahms' "Lullaby" and Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song" are not altogether sacred, they sit happily enough with the likes of the "Pie Jesu" from Fauré's Requiem and Schubert's "Ave Maria". Not every track is a coconut, and operatic sopranos rarely add much to "O Come, All Ye Faithful", but turn back to those first four songs and you know why you need the disc. Ghiorghiu is accompanied by a superbly drilled Romanian National Chamber Choir and the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Ion Marin. -Keith Clarke.
