Review Russell Watson: The Voice / Decca:

Russell Watson's story is a classic rags-to-riches fairytale: the former welder, after years of singing in pubs and clubs, travelled from Salford, his hometown, to London. He turned up unannounced at the Decca offices and was promptly signed up by one of the most important classical labels in the world. Vocal coaching followed, as did a number of successful live appearances supporting Cliff Richard. Now we have this 14-track CD which explores a wide range of musical styles. Watson's Italian is a little ponderous in tracks such as "Amor ti vieta", but this is more than compensated by his captivating and utterly natural-sounding tenor voice. The inevitable popular arias are there, namely "La donna è mobile" and "Nessun dorma!", sung with a refreshing and youthful vitality. Pop tracks, including Ultravox's classic 1980s hit "Vienna" and a witty cover version of "Barcelona" sung with former Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder as well as two new songs sit comfortably on the disc-Watson performs them with integrity, not simply paying lip service to the music of his generation. Watson has the potential to do for classical music what Jamie Oliver has done for cookery, and there are few people to whom this debut CD will not appeal. -Rebecca Agnew.

Despite being known for her televised sleuthing these days, Angela Lansbury once managed to both spook and delight Broadway audiences as the maker of very particular delicacies in Victorian London. In this macabre extravaganza, Lansbury's Nellie Lovett is the accomplice of Len Cariou's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. After he slashes his victims, she turns them into her meat pies' main ingredient. For this most ghoulish of shows, Sondheim looked for inspiration in the way the music is used in horror and suspense movies, particularly in the soundtracks of Bernard Herrmann. The winner of nine Tony Awards in 1979, Sweeney Todd may not be Sondheim's most accessible score, but its operatic complexity (it is almost entirely sung-through) makes it darkly spellbinding. -Elisabeth Vincentelli.

From the exquisite phrasing of the opening orchestra, this recording establishes itself as the standard by which all others should be measured. Herbert von Karajan's orchestra is no less than perfect, as much a virtuostic performer as the singers, evoking each moment's unique mood. Can there be any doubt that Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni were born to sing Puccini? Their sweet, creamy voices splendidly blend, creating a complete aural portrait of the bohemians' souls. Elizabeth Harwood is a wonderfully high-strung Musetta, with the vocal talent to support her many moods. The greatest recording ever of the world's most beloved opera. -Barbara Eisner Bayer.

Review Gorecki - Symphony No.3: Sorrowful Songs / Nonesuch:

This album, which catapulted Polish composer Henryk Górecki to into the international spotlight, takes texts born in pain and turns them into statements of affirmation through the use of music that ebbs and flows in mystic minimalism. The clear voice of soprano Dawn Upshaw, singing the Polish texts, is a large part of the success of this particular recording, but the music, contemporary without either dissonance or movie-music mawkishness, clarifies and uplifts the words. This is a moving and essential element of the modern repertoire. -Sarah Bryan Miller You gotta have this. After all, everyone else does, right? This was the classical music phenomenon of the 1990s. An obscure Polish composer writes a symphony setting texts all dealing with the subject of sorrow or oppression. It's a very long symphony, too, and scored almost entirely for string orchestra, mostly very slow and very quiet. And it sells millions of copies and the astonished composer gets rich beyond his wildest dreams (and good for him!). So the record companies rush out to record more of his music, only none of it sounds like this symphony, so nobody buys it, and his star wanes once again. That's life, I guess. [+]
