Review The Art of the Theremin / Clara Rockmore:As anyone who has seen the fascinating documentary Theremin will realize, the instrument named after its inventor was far more than a gimmick. The theremin was the first electronic instrument. It was so difficult to play that it never really caught on, except for special effects in Hollywood film scores. But Clara Rockmore became its best-known player, and in this, her only recording, she shows herself to have been a great artist. Hearing her play Rachmaninov's Vocalise is a truly memorable experience. Rockmore's sister, a noted pianist herself, accompanies with great sensitivity, and the recording holds up well. Review The Very Best of Relaxing Classics / Various Artists:Shelves may be groaning under the weight of the dozens of chillout/smooth/calm classical compilations available but they are going to have to make room for another, The Very Best of Relaxing Classics. A quick glance at the tracklisting reveals the usual suspects-Pachelbel's Canon in D, Barber's Adagio for Strings and the slow movement of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. But it's not all predictable. Liszt's Consolation No. 3, a poignant piano miniature, is most welcome as is Elgar's Sospiri for strings, harp and organ. Many of the pieces have become well known by being used in films and television programmes as well as for adverts: witness the Intermezzo from Mascagni's opera Cavalleria rusticana (Raging Bull and Kleenex), "Morning" from Peer Gynt by Grieg (Nescafé), John Tavener's haunting choral piece The Lamb (Orange) and the glorious Adagio (although, sadly, only an extract) from Schubert's String Quint! et in C (Inspector Morse). Slightly puzzling is the inclusion of two versions of Puccini's much-loved "O mio babbino caro" from his opera Gianni Schicchi-an instrumental version provides the first track and the compilation concludes with the original (featuring the divine Renée Fleming). -Rebecca Agnew.

Review Rostropovich - Master Cellist / Universal Classics:To celebrate his 75th birthday in 2002, Deutsche Grammophon has collected together some of legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich's finest recordings, four of which are on CD for the first time. Heading the bill is his 1968 recording of the Dvorák Cello Concerto, with Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. The combination of the two talents-peerless, lyrical playing and unforced yet spontaneously dramatic conducting-is nothing short of remarkable, and yet he sounds if possible even more glorious in the much less well-known Schumann Cello Concerto (recorded 1960). Here he seems to let his hair down and dance through Schumann's beautiful melodies without ever unbalancing the essential sobriety of the work. The second CD comprises works for cello and piano (with the masterly Alexander Dedyukhin at the keyboard) recorded in mono in 1956. The taxing Rachmaninov Cello Sonata is architecturally solid and full of fire and spirit, but it is in the salon pieces that complete the disc that the magic of Slava (Rostropovich's cognomen) shines through most clearly: the cello transcription of Schubert's impromptu in G flat is simply heartbreaking. A worthy tribute to a unique talent. -Warwick Thompson.

Review Bombay Dreams / Rahman:The Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced musical Bombay Dreams arrived on the London stage in June 2002. It's a hard task to retain the exciting authenticity of the Bollywood musical while coating it in a layer of West End musical, without dissipating the whole experience. Considering that Bombay Dreams composer AR Rahmen is one of such a phenomenon in India, it is odd that much of this music comes across as cheap imitation. One has the feeling that he was trying (or was he pushed?) to squeeze the music into a box, and only now and then does it burst forth from its restrictions. "Chaiyya Chaiyya" is one of the best pieces, in Hindi and with added metal guitar it has real oomph, but comes from the much-loved Bollywood film, Dil Se, and is a massively popular song in India. "Closer Than Ever" also has something, with interesting chord progression and some soaring lines for the singers to get their teeth into-the only number to do this. There are beautiful moments, but with no evident characterisation and appallingly banal lyrics by Don Black, it doesn't grab. The show itself makes up for the lack of musical originality with some stunning choreography, but ultimately leaves one wishing that they had just brought over a real Bollywood musical. -Antonia Couling.
