Review Elgar: Violin Concerto/Vaughan Williams: Lark ascending / EMI:In July 1997, after a five-year self-imposed exile from the world of classical music, Nigel Kennedy returned to the scene of one of his earlier triumphs with this incident-packed account of the Elgar concerto. It's a reading which, in the first two movements at least, displays a bristling temperament, rapt ardour and go-for-broke spontaneity rare in a studio recording. In the opening Allegro, Kennedy's superbly commanding first entry as well as his ravishing handling of the "Windflower" second subject movingly recall Albert Sammons's miraculous 1929 recording with Sir Henry Wood (and there can be no higher praise than that!). Oddly, the finale is not quite on the same level, being somewhat too brusque and calculated for comfort (Kennedy's playing in the exquisite cadenza was more moving in his earlier recording with Vernon Handley). Overall, though, it's a thrilling display, brimming with charisma and imaginative insight. Kennedy and Rattle's incredibly leisurely, self-consciously luxuriant way with The Lark Ascending (one of Vaughan Williams's most sublimely evocative nature-poems) will probably not be everyone's cup of tea, but their performance of the Elgar just has to be experienced. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review Shostakovich: The Jazz Album / Riccardo Chailly:Riccardo Chailly has proved himself adept in the highways and byways of Shostakovich's output. You really feel he enjoys this music, conducting it with relish and not a hint of condescension. Admittedly the Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings has real pathos in its second movement to offset the brittle humour and high jinx elsewhere. Ronald Brautigam brings a Gershwin-like uninhibitedness to his performance, with Peter Masseurs incisive yet elegant in the trumpet part. The two jazz suites are peripheral Shostakovich, but great fun all the same. The Concertgebouw's resident jazzers would clearly give any professional combo a run for its money, especially in the lengthy Second Suite, assembled from film and theatre scores. Tahiti Trot is even more intriguing than it sounds: an orchestral transcription of the 1920s hit "Tea For Two", made in a matter of hours to win a bet. Its a far cry from Shostakovich as we tend to think of him, yet valuable for throwing light on the heady era out of which the mature composer forcibly emerged. -Richard Whitehouse.

Review Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No.1 / Martha Argerich:Some artists grow into a sort of proprietary relationship with certain pieces of music. If anyone today owns this concerto, it's Martha Argerich. She's recorded it three times and this latest version seems to sum up an entire lifetime of living with and loving the music. Not only does Argerich simply find more in the notes than almost anyone else, she also does it with a sense of complete spontaneity and naturalness. She's also the most exciting pianist alive, which certainly doesn't hurt in such dazzling music. Claudio Abbado is one of her regular concerto accompanists and he knows better than to try to take over an Argerich performance. This is her show and he gives her the kind of support she needs to feel free to work her interpretative magic. -David Hurwitz.
