Review Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6 "Pathétique" / Berliner Philharmoniker Herbert Karajan:This moderately priced package gives you the best of Herbert von Karajan's Tchaikovsky performances, and when he was "on" with this composer, he was very impressive indeed. These are exceptionally well played, exciting, even noble versions of the composer's three most popular symphonies, and although Karajan recorded each of them four or five times, this least expensive edition is still the one to get. -David Hurwitz.

Review Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) -- Paris/Gardiner [1993] (NTSC) / Deutsche Grammophon:It is an oft-repeated saw, about life in the heavenly spheres, that the angels revere Bach but listen to Mozart. If they have DVD players, you can bet they're now watching this stunning production of Le Nozze di Figaro ("The Marriage of Figaro"), which comes about as close to Mozartian perfection as one could possibly hope to get. The faultlessly cast youthful performers bubble with infectious energy. Alison Hagley is a sprightly Susanna with a voice as clear as a bell, and brilliantly matched by a 28-year-old Bryn Terfel both acting and sounding in fine form. Hillevi Martinpelto demonstrates why she is one of the world's favourite Mozart singers with her melting tones, richly coloured voice and generous stage presence, and Rodney Gilfry gives a muscular, wonderfully controlled performance as the Count. Olivier Mille's direction mixes knockabout comedy and restrained pathos with fluid inventiveness, and there are even-heavens, can this really be an opera?-quite a few belly laughs, and deliciously amusing details. (Susanna's guitar playing during Cherubino's "Voi che sapete" is a comic delight, and Figaro's hidden sneers at Count Almaviva are hilarious. ) John Eliot Gardiner draws exquisite playing from his authentic-instrument orchestra and employs tempos that are ideal. Add to that gorgeous 18th-century costumes and effective sets-it doesn't get much better than this. On the DVD: the production is beautifully realised for home viewing, with clear sound (the sets are simple wooden panels, which continually and flatteringly push the sound to the front) and great camera direction. Review Brahms: Piano Concertos Nos.1 & 2 / Maurizio Pollini Berliner Philharmoniker Claudio Abbado:The piano concerto was no bravura lollipop to Brahms, who elevated concertos almost to the status of symphonies. But his two piano concertos are certainly not lacking in drama or virtuosity and they are given with edge-of-the-seat vitality here by two of music's giants-or three if you count the orchestra, the mighty Berlin Philharmonic, playing superbly. Perhaps the immediacy of the readings is heightened by the fact that both recordings are taken from live performances: the first concerto in the Vienna Musikverein in 1997 and the second in the Berlin Philharmonie in 1995. And if live performances conjures up thoughts of audiences making unsolicited contributions, don't worry. Either the Austrian and German audiences were particularly well behaved or the DG engineers have done miracles, because there is not so much as a single hand-clap, let alone any coughing and spluttering. As two Italians, Abbado and Pollini can be expected to turn in spirited performances, which they certainly do. But these are also thoughtful readings that will long outlive the appeal of more showy interpretations. -Keith Clarke.

Review Perpetual Motion / Sony Classical:Bela Fleck is one of the greatest five-string banjo players performing today. Beginning in the 1970s, he honed his lightning-fast chops performing bluegrass, then moved on to contemporary jazz and fusion sounds. With this album, he broadens his horizons once again by performing an entire programme of classical-music transcriptions. Reminiscent of classical-guitar albums by John Williams (who makes a guest appearance here), the disc traverses a wide repertoire-from Chopin mazurkas to Bach's Two and Three Part Inventions. Throughout, Fleck displays a feathery touch on his banjo, and his instrument offers a pleasant, brassy tone with very little twang. The technique he displays on Perpetual Motion is astounding and a refreshing change of pace from the smooth grooves found on the banjoist's Flecktones recordings. The arrangements are generally minimalist and understated, but violinist Joshua Bell, bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist Chris Thile and percussionist Evelyn Glennie join in on this ground-breaking disc. Bluegrass purists may be disappointed, but classical fans will be astounded by how perfectly natural Fleck's banjo sounds on these works. -Jason Verlinde.

Review Kiri / London Philharmonic Orchestra:Kiri Te Kanawa, the subject of this compilation disc, has had two life-changing moments in her career, the first of which made her a star, the second a mega-star. The former was her extraordinary overnight success at her Covent Garden debut as the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro in 1971. The latter was, of course, her performance at the wedding of Charles and Diana in 1981, which brought her talents before audiences watching in their multi-millions. This handsome compilation takes those two moments as the starting point of an overview of her astonishingly varied career, and includes "Dove sono" from Figaro and Handel's Let the Bright Seraphim from her royal wedding appearance. In both, her voice sounds meltingly gorgeous and creamy. The disc also includes her famously melting performances of arias from the lyric repertoire: "Depuis le Jour" from Charpentier's Louise, for example, and Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" (famously used on the soundtrack of the film A Room With a View. ) There's also a selection of her smooth performances of songs by Jerome Kern and George Gershwin. A great chance to hear one of the most beautiful voices of her generation. -Warwick Thompson.
