Review Feel the Spirit / Collegium:John Rutter's Feel the Spirit for mezzo-soprano, choir and orchestra was premiered in June 2001 in Carnegie Hall, New York. Made up of appealing arrangements of familiar spirituals ("Deep River", "When the Saints" etc) in a range of styles (from big-band and the blues to Caribbean and close harmony) it was conceived as a showcase for Melanie Marshall. Her warm, creamy sound is certainly captivating, while the Cambridge Singers are fresh-voiced, flexible and alert. Of equal interest, though, are the smaller-scale Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare from George Shearing and Rutter's Birthday Madrigals, written by Rutter for Shearing's 75th birthday. Both works feature Shakespearean texts, while Rutter also sets other poets of the same period. Plenty to catch the ear here-try Shearing's wistful "Who is Silvia?" with its naughty take on Schubert, and the delightfully snappy "Fie on sinful fantasy". Rutter's madrigals are just as beguiling, and there in the middle is an example of the kind of introspective number which displays the intriguing other side to his musical personality-a setting of "Draw on Sweet Night" as searching in its own way as John Wilbye's original madrigal. Rutter's direction is exemplary throughout. -Andrew Green.

Review MacMillan - Mass and Sacred Music / Hyperion:This recording of James MacMillan's Mass is an intense, emotionally charged 70 minutes reflecting the composer's deeply held religious beliefs. These are beliefs which, as he has said in commenting on the mood of Mass, are not immune to doubts and fears and an awareness of the "tragedies and uncertainties of our age". So don't expect an easy listen. The music featured on this album unfolds slowly, patiently, seeming to exist outside time, yet is coloured by extremes of pitch and dynamic requiring great virtuosity and control. The Mass, which is written in Latin and incorporates priest and congregation in liturgical use, could have been written for the singers of the Westminster Cathedral Choir, who know its contours intimately. The traditional hard-edged sound of the Westminster Cathedral trebles cuts through the vast acoustic like a knife, right up until the wonderfully imaginative hold-your-breath ending of the "Agnus Dei". Review Si tu m'ami / If You Love Me : 18th-Century Italian Songs / Cecilia Bartoli György Fischer:Alessandro Parisotti put together three volumes of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century arias in Rome in the 1880s, and called the whole series Arie antiche. These three books have since become the bane of almost every student singer's life, since their simplicity makes them ideal teaching fodder-but the same quality also makes them fearsomely difficult to perform convincingly. Singers often begin a recital with a couple just to prove that they can. Cecilia Bartoli takes the unusual step of performing a recital entirely made up of these pieces-and finds hitherto unsuspected riches in them, without ever sacrificing the simplicity necessary for stylistic accuracy. There is little here of her jaw- dropping coloratura technique, and much more of her ability to let the different colours of her wonderful voice tell the story of the song. She transforms a classroom war-horse like "Caro mio ben", for example, into a moment of pure spiritual intensity and longing. And she makes Vivaldi's portrait of a spurned wife ("Sposa son") truly heartbreaking. This is wonderful singing. -Warwick Thompson.
