Review Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen / Decca:Modern storage media (CD/DVD) offer both high fidelity and great reliability in the playback of music. Yet only a bit more than a generation ago, the possibilities inherent in the long-playing record inspired John Culshaw, a young producer for Decca, to attempt the most ambitious recording project ever contemplated up to that time-a complete studio recording of the Ring. Though other Rings were issued after this landmark enterprise, none have equalled the Decca Ring in popularity. There are those who prefer live performances, or who feel that the sound and theatrical effects in this recording are overdone; nonetheless this remains the benchmark Ring, as shown by its seemingly endless re-release schedule. The Ring effort was high profile at the time and helped nail down Sir Georg Solti's status as a "superstar" conductor and authoritative interpreter of the Wagnerian repertory. Another key contributor to the success of the project was the uniform excellence in the casting. Definitive performances given include Neidlinger's nietzschean Alberich, Stolze's whining Mime, Boehme's rumbling Fafnir, along with Nilsson in her prime-more a force of nature than a human voice. The care lavished on the capture of the music was unmatched at the time of the recording, and still leaves this as one of the best sounding Rings even today, when the oldest part (Rheingold) has reached its fortieth anniversary. -Christian C. Review Bach: Magnificat / EMI Classics:Bach-Magnificat is a complete compilation, compiled by EMI, to commemorate Bach's 250th anniversary, in an accessible, luxurious anthology of the baroque master's sacred music. Over two and a half hours, this programme encompasses the grand scale of the Magnificat in D (BWV243) and Missa Brevis in A (BWV234). Between these are scared cantatas, the very popular choral Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV140 contrasting with sensitive solo vocal writing in Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (BWV12), motets, arias and an organ prelude and fugue. It is a well-balanced programme, covering every aspect of Bach's church music except the Passions. The interesting booklet recounts King's College Choir's long involvement with the music of Bach, while the Academy of Ancient Music are thoroughly versed in this repertoire, the two ensembles producing a glorious sound. The soloists are of the very highest calibre, with Ian Bostridge, Michael Chance, Michael George, Susan Gritton and Lisa Milne, bringing great humanity to this incomparable music. Review Rostropovich - Master Cellist / Universal Classics:To celebrate his 75th birthday in 2002, Deutsche Grammophon has collected together some of legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich's finest recordings, four of which are on CD for the first time. Heading the bill is his 1968 recording of the Dvorák Cello Concerto, with Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. The combination of the two talents-peerless, lyrical playing and unforced yet spontaneously dramatic conducting-is nothing short of remarkable, and yet he sounds if possible even more glorious in the much less well-known Schumann Cello Concerto (recorded 1960). Here he seems to let his hair down and dance through Schumann's beautiful melodies without ever unbalancing the essential sobriety of the work. The second CD comprises works for cello and piano (with the masterly Alexander Dedyukhin at the keyboard) recorded in mono in 1956. The taxing Rachmaninov Cello Sonata is architecturally solid and full of fire and spirit, but it is in the salon pieces that complete the disc that the magic of Slava (Rostropovich's cognomen) shines through most clearly: the cello transcription of Schubert's impromptu in G flat is simply heartbreaking. Review Puccini - Tosca / Covent Garden Royal Opera House Orchestra:Looked at from virtually any angle, this Tosca is a triumph. It is lavishly presented (billed as the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of Benoit Jacquot's film), superbly engineered and boasts a first-rate cast. There are, indeed, two distinct stars: the outstanding soprano Angela Gheorghiu in an assumption of the title role which is awe-inspiring in its breadth of emotion and dramatic range; and the conductor, Antonio Pappano, whose intimate knowledge of Puccini's score illuminates page after page and detail after detail. Pappano possesses a complete grasp of the operatic situation, faultlessly pacing the whole opera to bring about a spine-tingling climax. The Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden give their all for him. If Roberto Alagna's portrayal of Cavaradossi does not quite scale the dizzying heights of Gheorghiu's Tosca, he is nevertheless capable of much subtlety. Ruggero Raimondi's Scarpia is all the more evil for his multi-layered approach to this character. Pappano's Tosca now becomes the modern version to have. Ideally, it should sit in one's record collection along with Maria Callas' classic 1953 mono version. -Colin Clarke.
