Review Vaughan Williams - String Quartets Nos. 1 & 2; Phantasy Quintet / Jackson/Maggini Quartet:

The second of Vaughan Williams' two-string quartets proves particularly fascinating listening in these marvellously sympathetic and beautifully recorded performances of some unjustly overlooked repertoire. Completed in 1943, it's a searching, formidably taut utterance, whose troubled demeanour points the way forward to the apocalyptic Sixth Symphony of five years later. Only in the hushed final movement do the clouds finally lift, but it's a hard-won serenity that never quite banishes the work's nervy undertow. By contrast, the bracing First Quartet of 1908 is more obviously influenced by folk and often acquires a distinctly Gallic hue-no great surprise, perhaps, given that VW had finished his studies with Ravel in Paris just a few months previously. It's a wonderfully melodious, exquisitely wrought piece, whose comparative neglect down the years continues to baffle, and it's preceded here by the Phantasy Quintet, another prodigiously inventive, raptly lyrical essay, completed in 1912. Throughout, the Magginis respond with exhilarating assurance, irreproachable sensitivity and unstinting dedication; for the lovely Phantasy Quintet they are joined by the excellent Garfield Jackson (violist of the Endellion Quartet). This is yet another remarkable Naxos bargain, in sum, and absolutely not to be missed. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review Chopin: Complete Nocturnes / DG:

On the 150th anniversary of his death, Deutsche Grammophon released this impressive box set featuring the complete works of Frédéric Chopin. Spread out over 17 CDs, it contains some truly big-name artists-Argerich, Pollini, Barenboim, and Ashkenazy-and a few you've probably never heard of. The majority of the set's nine volumes contain some music newly produced for this undertaking, and a few items (Chopin's songs, for instance) were recorded specifically for this collection. A well-illustrated book is included-it contains an essay, dateline, and illustrations-and each volume in the set gets its own liner notes. The music? It varies from great to less than great, but most of it is worth hearing. Those accustomed to Rubinstein's readings of the Mazurkas will find those played by Jean-Marc Luisada less fluid and lacking Rubinstein's power. Chopin's songs, seldom heard and filled with elements of Polish folk dances and the less-than-stellar lyrics of the composer's friend Stefan Witwicki, get a college try here by soprano Elzbieta Szmytka. They sound as good as you'll hear anywhere (if you can find them). It probably goes without saying that Martha Argerich's rousing 26 Préludes are some of the set's more exciting moments. But, really, the entire collection is solid. [+]
It should be noted that budget label Naxos has released its own Chopin edition at less than half the price of this set. With Idil Biret as the only performer on that set, you miss out on some of the diverse performances and personalities found here. Also, to please those of us who already own favourite performances of these works, each two-CD volume in the Complete Chopin Edition can be purchased individually. Bravo. -Jason Verlinde.

Review Essential Purcell / Hyperion:

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord always (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises-particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. -Matthew Westphal.

Review Göran Söllscher - From Yesterday to Penny Lane / Universal Classics:

From Yesterday to Penny Lane is the follow-up to Göran Söllscher's first disc of Beatles guitar transcriptions-and it is every bit as enjoyable, and stylistically even more adventurous. Söllscher has the knack of knowing how far to take each song-teasing out the pathos in "Norwegian Wood" and "The Long and Winding Road", while respecting the simple yet sublime melodic writing of "In My Life" and "I Will". Per Arne Glorvigen joins him on bandoneon for three tango transformations, including a suitably ominous "Come Together", complete with guitar percussives. For many the fifth Beatle, George Martin's roots in the world of 1950s light music are vividly evoked in his Three American Sketches. "Westward, Look!" engages with its catchy rhythmic syncopation, while "New York, New York" has a breeziness recalling classic Dave Brubeck. Finally, there' a seven-song suite arranged by Cuban Leo Brouwer, guitar composer second to none. Highlights include a wistful and harmonically sumptuous "Here, There and Everywhere", and the elaborate fantasy conjured from "Eleanor Rigby". Crisply and atmospherically recorded, this is worth investigating. -Richard Whitehouse.
