Review The John Rutter Collection / Universal Classics:The John Rutter Collection brings together 22 pieces by one of the most popular choral composers of our time, compiled from several discs already released on the Collegium Label. All performed by The Cambridge Singers, the choir which Rutter founded back in 1981, the tracks range from the joyous "Shepherd's pipe carol" of 1966 to the 1995 setting of Philip Sidney's poem "My true love hath my hear" from Birthday Madrigals. The disc opens with one of Rutter's best-known works, the timeless "For the beauty of the earth" and also includes his settings of Psalm 23 and "All things bright and beautiful"-popular with choirs and audiences alike-as well as two movements each from his Magnificat and Requiem. Most tracks are accompanied by the City of London Orchestra, breathing new life into works which are normally heard with piano accompaniment. In his sleeve note, Rutter reminds us that he stood next to John Tavener in school choir; how extraordinary that these two boys would go on to have the international success that they have. And while Rutter will always have his detractors, one cannot help but admire the sense of joy and wonder encapsulated in each small but perfectly formed musical gem. -Rebecca Agnew.

Review Nyman - The Piano / EMI:Michael Nyman came of age as a classical composer in the radical London of the late '60s. His work embraces multiple vernaculars (jazz, avant garde, conceptual art) and helped cement the foundation of what came to be known as minimalism. Decades into his career, Nyman's score to Jane Campion's film The Piano made him a star. The movie's themes of colonialism and silence (its protagonist, portrayed by Holly Hunter, cannot speak) were perfectly aligned with his longtime interests in world and ambient music. Horn players assist members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in fleshing out Nyman's stately, hymn-like motifs. On the more heavily orchestrated cues, sentimentality wins out over minimalist restraint; the best tracks feature Nyman on solo piano, playing the rudimentary, faux period repertoire of Hunter's character. -Marc Weidenbaum.

Review The Best of the Three Tenors / José Carreras Plácido Domingo Luciano Pavarotti James Levine Zubin Mehta:Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors, namely José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotii, combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a "best of" CD. They gave their first concert in Rome; that event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time. This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles as well as at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their spectacular backdrop. The 22 tracks which comprise The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La traviata to popular songs including "Singin' in the rain" via songs from the shows ("You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc-each piece is performed by all three singers. Review Bizet: Carmen / Universal Classics:This is a super performance, slightly outside the common mould. In 1977, when this was recorded, Claudio Abbado was a great opera conductor, filled with sharp insights and a nice sense of the architecture of whole operas. He always seemed to know where he was going, and his ability to build to climaxes was second to none. Abbado has a rather elegant Carmen here in the smallish-voiced, introspective Teresa Berganza, a gorgeous singer who patently refuses to force her voice or her character into vulgarity. It's a fine reading. Placido Domingo is at his best in both intimate and maniacal moments, and Ileana Cotrubas's Micaela almost makes us care about this sappy little gal. Sherrill Milnes's Escamillo has plenty of swagger and voice. Berganza's subtlety combined with the wild passions of those around her make this a very good Carmen indeed. -Robert Levine.

Review My Fair Lady - Original Soundtrack / Sony Classical:Lerner and Loewe's elegant, indestructible musical is one of those rare Broadway triumphs to be transferred to the big screen with practically every note and lyric intact. Warner's plush film version also preserved for posterity the definitive performances of Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins (though Jack Warner originally wanted Cary Grant) and Stanley Holloway as Alfred Dolittle. But if the decision to replace Broadway's radiant Julie Andrews (then a stranger to Hollywood) with the more bankable Audrey Hepburn remains a tad controversial, there is little doubt that Miss Hepburn made a captivatingly chic Eliza Dolittle; albeit with a singing voice provided by game dubber-for-the-stars, Marni Nixon. My Fair Lady was lovingly restored to its full Technicolored, widescreen glory in 1994, and from the spectacularly revitalised soundtrack comes this sumptuous rival to its legendary Broadway counterpart. Greatly expanded to present every beautifully constructed number in its entirety, as well as previously unreleased nuggets from André Previn's luminous, Oscar-winning underscore, the earlier CD of the 1964 soundtrack album now sounds distinctly moth-eaten.
