Review Bach - Keyboard Concertos Nos. 1, 2 and 4 / Sony Classical:

With this disc of Bach keyboard concertos, it seems that Murray Perahia is in the midst of an intense love affair with Bach-not so long ago he presented the world with an impeccably sensitive yet wonderfully energised version of the Goldberg Variations. Reassuringly, the more recent release is called Volume 1, so presumably there must be a second on the way. Every ornament, every note, every phrase is beautifully moulded, the piano the physical and emotional epicentre of the musical vision. We may get to hear these pieces on harpsichord more than piano these days, but there's nothing to beat the sheer exhilaration of the piano's percussive punch, its pingy bottom register, the uncluttered way it can reveal the sheer athleticism of Bach's linear passagework. Highlights are to be found in every bar but for an appetiser sample the opening movement of the First Concerto (track 1), or the lilting soulfulness of the slow movement of the Second (track 5). The orchestra are as masterly as the soloist and together they make sublime music. This is one purchase you'll never regret. -Harriet Smith.

Review Chopin: The Nocturnes / Deutsche Grammophon:

Can 21 Nocturnes be a bit too much of a good thing in one go? Not if the composer is Chopin, undisputed king of the genre, and the pianist is Maria Joâo Pires. She's not exactly a prolific recording artist, but the results are invariably special. Not for her the namby-pamby, soft-focus approach that these pieces sometimes provoke. Chopin's approach to the form is by no means straightforwardly lyrical-take No. 4: it starts innocently enough, but in its middle section that mood is abruptly flung aside by a considerably more passionate section. To Pires, each is a song, a narrative urgently to be expounded (just try the famous No. 12-an entirely new experience in her hands, or the way she becomes the most expressive of sopranos in No. 20). Night casts strange shadows, shedding a different perspective on what seems so familiar by day. No one is more aware of that than Chopin. [+]
And no protagonist relishes the very innovative aspect of these pieces better than Pires. -Harriet Smith.

Review Albéniz/Granados: Piano Works / Double Decca:

An essential package, containing as it does the two most indispensable masterpieces of the entire Spanish piano music repertoire, in performances which have long (and justly) been regarded as classics. The twelve "impressions" that comprise Iberia occupied Isaac Albèniz for the last four years of his life (he completed the fourth and final set of three in January 1909). They form an exuberant, sun-drenched sequence, astoundingly virtuosic (Albèniz was himself a renowned pianist) and brimful with toe- tapping rhythmic verve and irresistible local colour. In his gorgeous Goyescas (premiered in 1911, two years after Albèniz's death) Enrique Granados explores a more harmonically searching, wistfully introspective vein: the heavenly "Maiden and the Nightingale" (based on a folk melody) is deservedly one of the most popular of all 20th-century piano gems. The great Barcelona-born pianist Alicia de Larrocha has been playing this music all her life and it shows time and again in the improvisatory imagination, pellucid tone-colouring and glitteringly idiomatic flavour of her intensely poetic and technically commanding readings. The remastered mid-70s recordings have come up as clean as a whistle, with all the heady bloom and admirable focus of the excellent original masters retained. Terrific value. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review The Original Four Seasons / Vanessa-Mae:

This recording achieves the Herculean task of rescuing Vivaldi's oft- performed concerti from the hackneyed oblivion of elevator music, and ingeniously resuscitating them in an arresting and enthralling manner. It as if the parched roots of these pieces have been watered with something rather bracing and slightly alcoholic, and suddenly shot into blooms of brilliant red and electric blue. Vanessa-Mae, her producer Pamela Nicholson, and the group of highly acclaimed soloists and professors which makes up the orchestra Laureate, have all contributed to these exciting arrangements. The starting premise was that Vivaldi would have expected his soloists to embellish and elaborate the solo parts for themselves: on this recording that has meant fleshing out the orchestral parts so that they stretch the techniques of everyone involved, and turning the solo part itself into a Paganini-esque jeu d'esprit. (Following Sir Thomas Beecham's advice, who said that a harpsichord sounds like "skeletons copulating on a galvanised tin roof", that instrument has judiciously been omitted!) And the wonderful thing is that the programmatic sense of the seasons- - birds twittering, teeth chattering, hay-gathering etc-is not mocked, but reinforced. -Warwick Thompson.
