Review Andrea Bocelli - Sacred Arias / Philips:

When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favourite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli-who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself-returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first major English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalise Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of colour and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a programme of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu". Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. -Thomas May.

Review Puccini: La Bohème / Decca:

From the exquisite phrasing of the opening orchestra, this recording establishes itself as the standard by which all others should be measured. Herbert von Karajan's orchestra is no less than perfect, as much a virtuostic performer as the singers, evoking each moment's unique mood. Can there be any doubt that Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni were born to sing Puccini? Their sweet, creamy voices splendidly blend, creating a complete aural portrait of the bohemians' souls. Elizabeth Harwood is a wonderfully high-strung Musetta, with the vocal talent to support her many moods. The greatest recording ever of the world's most beloved opera. -Barbara Eisner Bayer.

Review Pärt: Alina / ECM New Series:

This is a remarkable release, both for its beauty and its novelty at programming. Für Alina is a two-minute solo piano piece composed by Pärt in l976 that ushered in his "tintinnabuli" style, that is, the bell-like, simple, no-notes-wasted method for which he has become beloved and famous. On this CD, pianist Alexander Malter plays it twice, as the second and fourth tracks; each iteration takes almost 11 minutes (Pärt assumed it would be embellished, and he chose this pair for the CD). There are minute variations in tempo, emphasis, and rubato from one to the other, but, all that being said, it amounts to 22 minutes of the most beautiful, contemplative music ever performed. Almost equally gentle is Spiegel im Spiegel , played as tracks 1, 3 and 5 and scored for piano and, respectively, violin, cello, and then violin again. The notes the instruments mirror one another (Spiegel is German for mirror), with notes added to the scale with each repetition, and so on. Almost impossible to describe in its loveliness, each of the three sets is beautiful; the cello in track 3 gives it extra mellowness. This is music staggering in its simple complexity and a treat for the ear and heart. -Robert Levine.

Review My Fair Lady - Original Soundtrack / Sony Classical:

Lerner and Loewe's elegant, indestructible musical is one of those rare Broadway triumphs to be transferred to the big screen with practically every note and lyric intact. Warner's plush film version also preserved for posterity the definitive performances of Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins (though Jack Warner originally wanted Cary Grant) and Stanley Holloway as Alfred Dolittle. But if the decision to replace Broadway's radiant Julie Andrews (then a stranger to Hollywood) with the more bankable Audrey Hepburn remains a tad controversial, there is little doubt that Miss Hepburn made a captivatingly chic Eliza Dolittle; albeit with a singing voice provided by game dubber-for-the-stars, Marni Nixon. My Fair Lady was lovingly restored to its full Technicolored, widescreen glory in 1994, and from the spectacularly revitalised soundtrack comes this sumptuous rival to its legendary Broadway counterpart. Greatly expanded to present every beautifully constructed number in its entirety, as well as previously unreleased nuggets from André Previn's luminous, Oscar-winning underscore, the earlier CD of the 1964 soundtrack album now sounds distinctly moth-eaten.

Review We'll Keep a Welcome / Bryn Terfel Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera Gareth Jones:

As one of the UK's leading opera singers, bass-baritone Bryn Terfel is known and universally admired for his recordings and live performances. He has, however, taken time out to head back to Wales and record a disc of songs and hymns from his homeland. To quote "Cymru Fach", "There's a place for the whole of her in my heart, dearest Wales. Each mountain, each valley, each river, dearest Wales. 'Though I travel far from her hilltops, far from her resounding waterfalls, within minutes I will dream my way back from afar to that sanctuary of my childhood: dearest Wales". The resulting CD comprises 21 tracks, from the rousing and joyous "Cwm Rhondda" to the poignant and introspective "My Little Welsh Home". Joined by the massed forces of the Black Mountain Chorus, Risca Male Choir and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Terfel is the perfect ambassador for this music, while Chris Hazell should be commended for his imaginative orchestrations of 17 of the tracks. The sleeve notes for We'll Keep a Welcome cite the Welsh proverb "To be born Welsh is to be born with music in your blood and poetry in your soul". Terfel was born with music, poetry and a little bit of magic, all of which he brings to this CD. Whether or not you are Welsh, this is one disc sure to send tingles up and down your spine. [+]

Review The Only Piano Album You'll Ever Need / Victor:

Whoever first dreamt up the title "The Only Piano/Opera/Banjo Album You'll Ever Need" must have been hoping record buyers wouldn't take it too literally. A translation would be "We Hope That When You've Listened To This You'll Want To Buy Lots More Piano/Opera/Banjo Albums". So as an attempt to lure listeners into the world of the piano, how does this set measure up? Most of the all-time favourite piano pieces are here (though you won't find Golliwogg's Cakewalk) and childhood memories may well be stirred by the likes of Für Elise and Rondo alla Turca. It's not all solo piano-the orchestra is wheeled on for the Big Moments from concertos by Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart and Rachmaninov (who also gets the famous 18th variation from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini). Among the big-name pianists represented are Geza Anda, Emanuel Ax, Emil Gilels, Vladimir Horowitz, Alfredo Perl, Kathryn Stott and Andrew Wilde. Recordings range in time from 1955 to 1999. Purists may bridle at the lollipop nature of the programme, but for those genuinely looking for an introduction to the instrument's richly rewarding repertoire, the 150 minutes of music on these two CDs should fit the bill nicely. -Keith Clarke.

Review Mozart: Complete Violin Concertos / Philips:

At the ripe old age of 19 Mozart wrote five violin concertos, and they represent his coming of age as a composer of orchestral music. From here on, it's basically one masterpiece after another. Though not difficult works, technically speaking, they partake in full measure of Mozart's uniquely sensual brand of melody. That means that successful performances must know how to spin out a singing musical line, while at the same time making the most of the rare opportunities for soloistic display. Taste and musicianship are more important qualities than virtuosity, and that makes these pieces ideal vehicles for Arthur Grumiaux's aristocratic temperament and technical polish. -David Hurwitz.
