Review Verdi: Rigoletto / Decca:This Rigoletto has been around for so long it might be easy to take it for granted or skip it for a newer set. Don't! It features all three principals in superb voice, as well as pacing from Bonynge that is much heavier on drama than most of us expect from him. Sutherland may sound a bit mature (and mush-mouthed) for Gilda, but not only is she sympathetic, she sings gorgeously. And speaking of gorgeous, those familiar only with the Pavarotti of latter years would be wise to hear him here-this is stylish, full-blooded, Golden Age singing. The beautifully round tone, the easy high notes, the impeccable diction, and the pointed characterisation are unique. Milnes, in the title role, is also in splendid voice, offering smooth legato, brilliant, Verdian ring and real attention to the text. The analogue sound is excellent. No other modern recording offers the visceral thrill of this Rigoletto-go for it. -Robert Levine.

Review Shaken and Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond Project / James Bond Films (Related Recordings):Enlisting an array of indie icons, from Iggy Pop to Chrissie Hynde (whose version of "Live And Let Die" is a definite highlight), Arnold attempts to update-if not exactly subvert-some of the more notable Bond theme tunes. Yet despite this noble attempt at deconstruction, what's remarkable here is how so many of the acts conform to expectations: Pulp, typically, make "All Time High" seem a furtive, even faintly grubby experience; while Aimee Mann performs "Nobody Does It Better" with a kind of weary sarcasm, either unable or unwilling to swallow the myth of male potency. On the other hand, Shara Nelson's reading of "Moonraker", and Martin Fry's "Thunderball," each manage to communicate at least a little of the magic of the original versions. And having at last found a piece worthy of him, David McAlmont loses no opportunity to make "Diamonds Are Forever" his own. -Andrew McGuire.

Review A Clockwork Orange / Original Soundtrack:This music, like Stanley Kubrick's controversial film and the book by Anthony Burgess on which it was based, has a strange timelessness, seeming to exist in an immediate future that never quite arrives yet has always been with us. Music is central to the whole concept of the story, in that the violent impulses of the delinquent Alex are inseparably bound up with the emotional force of the music he loves, notably Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. At the same time, Alex's debased moral values are reflected in the debased aesthetic values of the world he lives in. All this is manifest in the music featured in the film, which mixes bona fide classical excerpts with perverse, fizzy electronic versions and original pieces. These are mainly by the pre-Wendy Walter Carlos, doyen(ne) of the classical synthesiser whose Switched-On Bach defined the genre, and are spookily jarring in their effectiveness. Scariest of all, perhaps, is Gene Kelly's classic rendition of "Singin' in the Rain" that provides a rhythmic accompaniment to one of Alex's assaults. If you've experienced the film, or the book or intend to do either, you'll want this disc. -Roger Thomas.
